Hi!

Can someone tell me about vocoders?

I know there is this Orange vocoder (Chicane used it). But how about that Cher effeckt in that Love after Love track? Any ideas what vocoder did that?

Are there some vocoders that I could use with Cool Edit? I would like to get some quite naturall voice with little vocoder on it ;) So any tips about that?

The Cher song you're referring to is called Believe, by the way. There's a bit of mystery regarding how it was done - it's a safe bet it was done using the Autotune feature in Cubase. (I don't buy the Digitech Talker story, I think the studio made that up to throw you off.)

The RBC Voice Tweaker will do the job easily. There's a MIDI-enabled version of it where you can lock the vocal pitches to notes that you play on the keyboard. "I'm blue, da ba dee da ba daie, da be dee, da ba daie..." As for using it with CoolEdit, it'll work but you won't have the MIDI business. It's DirectX, so you might be able to use it in Fruity. Acid for sure.

RBC Voice Tweaker WAS USED FOR "IAM BLUE"?

there's no mystery, that Cher effect, and that blue da ba dee effect is SO Antares Autotune (it's available in both hardware rack form and software plugin form). Autotune is actually used to make singers sing better (i e it puts the signal into a "grid" of clean notes) and with extreme settings it sounds like Cher, which has become a gimmick.

[edit] the way autotune works is fundamentally different from how a vocoder works! With autotune the output signal is the voice signal. With vocoded signals the output signal is the (effected) "carrier" signal (i think that's what it's called) i e a synthesizer usually.[/edit]

Aaaaaarrrrrr...

NEVER use the Autotune... it's the most horrible effect ever!!

Mr.Mystery, what's wrong with Autotune?
TraNcerke
sounds unnatural, unless that 's what you want
Vizay
well if ya want that cheer effect then you defenetly don't want it to sound natural so... :p
Mr.Mystery
It's just... ultra cheesy...

I just hate the way they use it in pop country harmonies. Ecch!!

I like the vocoder-effeckt in some songs and with some vocals. But it is used way too much (I mean, it is used in wrong kind of tracks...). It is some kind of trend to use vocoder even if it don't fit the vocal :nervous:

Vocoder is good way for beginners to get their vocals sound "better". But for commersial use when producers got MONEY and name to get real and "good" singers, then why to put the vocoder in every track? Why it is so popular now?
