so depressing. I hate that it had to go to PK's.. :( Such a lame way to lose. |
+1.....:( :( :( USA totally outplayed Japan, so it really IS the worst way to go: when you know you deserve to win, but come away in second is pretty depressing! |

| Hope solo is beautiful, but someone must have lie to her about making her believe that shes a good goolie. She has no clue about the ABC of goalkeeping. The way she faces penalty kicks is HORRIBLE. she either has no talent or her personal coach is a johnny-come-lately on the subject. |

She was the WPS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2009.
If you recall the game, she got hit right before the Japanese scored their 2nd goal and didn't look to be at top form for the PKs. |

lol. What are the ABCs of goalkeeping in your opinion?
If she is being lied to, its by the majority of knowledgable soccer authorities, considering she's is considered one of the best in the world.
She saved a PK in each of the shootouts she was in this World Cup. Thats about as well as you can realtistically expect. Her 3 teammates who missed their PKs are much more at fault than she is IMO. |

+1...you're not allowed to miss PKs as a professional. The odds are heavily stacked against you as a keeper. |

Well probably I'm being a little bias about it since this is actually the only tournament that Ive seen her play. I might be wrong and shes probably the female Casillas on regular season, but You should watch both penalty shout-outs from the Brazil and Japan games and pay attention in one basic thing. She moves TOO soon on most of shots, giving the adversary a bit more time to think. That's fundamental on every keeper preparing for pk's. Its such a shame since she has long arms and legs that would make her pretty tough to beat. Besides that, she takes care of FKs and Cks very poorly. she has absolutely no clue on how to position her teammates, there was a bunch of occasions that created danger on the area because of this.
But again, I just watched four or five games. shes prob an animal at club level. but for what I saw, there were other goolies that did much better than her in my humble opinion.
pd: She's such a cutie! |

Yeah, agreed. I also take issue with the fact that Wambach and Morgan weren't the first 2 to take penalties. They had JUST scored goals in that very game, and I would have thought their confidence levels would have been higher than the 3 girls who missed their penalties.
Oh well. Good game nontheless. |

There is nothing 'fundamental' about dealing with PKs though really. I was a GK my entire life playing soccer, and have participated in many a shootout. All goalies have their own style when it comes to them. Saving just 1 PK in a shootout is considered good, and she saved 1 in each of the ones she was in this World Cup.
The pressure is really on the shooters, and they failed miserably yesterday. |

^that's funny man, i was always a gk too..for the longest time :p
i would agree with skalariak in that i noticed she moved way too early on a few occasions but, still, everyone else is right in that the fault is on those who missed their shots. About 15 min after the USA shootout, the Brazil - Paraguay game went to a shootout and I couldn't help but think that Julio Cesar, who was beaten, was much less to blame than Hope Solo. Cesar was genuinely impressive in goal, in spite of having been beaten. I'm not arguing that Solo isn't good at what she does - she's certainly good. I'm just saying that she isn't impressive. I think my opinion in this matter may be attributed to being somewhat of a chauvinist. But when it comes to a sport like soccer...who can really argue against that? |

Villar was an animal against Brasil. That game could have easily been 3-0 Brasil but Villar was just in the zone. It simply wasn't Brasil's day but after watching the national team play a couple times, once they click, I believe it's going to be lights out. Should be fun to watch how some of these international teams develop as we approach the next World Cup! |
