That's just nonsense.

Maybe not as many as we used to have, but there are still loads of events. Over the next few weeks alone we have Global Gathering, Creamfields and SW4.

It isn't nonsense is it now!? When was the last time a proper trance tube got near the charts? When was the last time there was a proper trance club with 1000 plus peoe in it? And if it's still so big how comes your average person doesn't know a name- I should know I teach teenagers and NONE of them even know what trance is! A reality check is needed here!

I agree with you that trance has had it. However, I'd have thought someone of your vintage would know better than to judge the contemporary strength of a genre by whether it's in the charts or whether teenagers know the names of the superstars.

While you're here, why did you choose the name "Jon the Dentist" as your stage name?

let me rephrase my point:
as you know i am 'vintage'(LOL) but that said i am also very current as you can see from the mixes i post regularely. i know that todays music is way better than back in the day but the events dont match. I would argue, as someone who has djd all over the world to 30 000 plus stages on a regular basis particularely in the US and Canada, as well as holland and germany, that the UK has never really been that big for trance, not in the sense that it has provided a real scene for it other than the commercial scene. my point being about tracks in the charts that it reflects a 'scene' as such. you cannot deny that trance is a minority interest music genre- just ask anyone for their (real) sales figures on beatport, trackitdown etc. what the end of the 90s did show with tragically commercial trance tunes in the charts is there was an appetite for it.
anyway, it has died globally and that is proven by attendances and the paltry fees djs will get now. its why being a club dj is not something you can sustain as a profession any longer (unless you want to earn less than those who work in tescos!). sadly those experts like myself were frozen out by cheaper djs who lack the skills and knowledge to carry the music forward. it also became too much about production as promotion rather than plain old great djing which is an entirely dofferent skill!
anyway, rant over but if you want to know my stage name origins you have to get my kindle ebook:

In your original post you were referring to trance events, not the music itself. With regards to events, the UK has certainly not 'had it'.

Gatecrasher - Birmingham
Godskitchen - Birmingham
MOS - London
The Emporium - Coalville
Cream - Liverpool

All of the above hold regular events.

if you think any of those are 'trance' events you really need to travel more! i would suggest start with a look at canada.....
note i used the word 'proper' not 'clubs that are cash cows for greedy people and promoters rather than for the djs and music itself'

As per the quote I used, you asked about 'proper trance clubs with 1,000 plus people in it'. So that's what I gave you.
jonthedentist
we will have to agree to disagree mate! im sorry but i will never accept gatecrasher or cream, in particular, as trance clubs and as far as the mos is concerned there are not aligned to any genre and so therefore are just a venue in respect of nights put on. indeed my favourite memory of the mos was ltj bukems d and b night on thursdays - also re coleville and the emporium- i span there once and it was just a ghastly hard house venue so that isnt trance either- come on give me a 'proper' trance club! lol

this guy Moose threw down one of the biggest if not theee biggest trance even in Wisconsin not tooo long ago

jonthedentist
now thats more like it- i bet it was a 'real' trance event and not some co-orporate UK BS either! i remember a gig in Wisconsin mind, in the outback somewhere in a field in the middle of nowhere with about 50 people including mums and dads- but thats a story in my book so i wont give it away, suffice to say it was hilarious!
jonthedentist
Madison- that's where it was in Wisconsin and I'll always remember it because we had to drive up from Chicago because tornado warnings had cancelled our connecting flights! Some excellent thunderstorms were witnessed en route!
