How do I get this crunchiness on my snare or hat?

Hello all,

I could use a pair of trained ears to help me figure out what effects are on these intro drums and how I might go about getting the crunchiness of the snare/hat found in the below example.

From the sound of it, my first guess is that the "crunchiness" comes from some kind of bitcrusher. After trying this out myself, though, I get something closer to white noise than the "crunch" you hear in the clip. Is there something else I'm missing? Maybe a degrader or downsampler of sorts?

Another part of this clip I'm curious about ,which ties to an older post of mine, is the low offbeat drum hit (with some kind of subtle ringing on top).. I thought this might have been a tom when I first heard it but is it just a kick drum with the ADSR fudged around? Or is that simply a bass sine synth hit?

I only want to know how to do this for the sake of learning what effects to use to achieve a certain sound. Yes, I experiment extensively but I've only gotten so far.

Appreciate your input!

P.S. This clip is taken from Alexander Popov's remix of AVB - Mirage.

I would use logic's bitcrusher and turn the resolution down to 1bit to get that effect.

The low offbeat drum hit sounds to me like a kick that got 400+ cut and layered with that ring sound.

In Live you can get the crunch-effect by using the Redux, switching downsample mode to soft and play around with the value.

I just can't get it that crunchy using only the bitcrusher! I'm wondering if he uses a saturator or something to make it "crispier"? Or maybe it's the sound source I'm using - I'm trying snares and open hats.

In Sasha's remix comp for Cut Me Down, there was a part in there too with really crunchy percs. I just think it's a really neat effect and adds a lot of texture to the percussions, so that's why I'm so hell bent on getting it right.

As for the low, off-beat kick drum with the ring sound...Is that ring just a product of a decimator or some other distortion?

So you're saying iteratively applying these effects is the way to go? I'm gonna give it a go. I'll post a result when I get close.
