Quick Question About Layering Sub-Bass

Hey there,

I have a sub-bass (single oscillator sine wave) running beneath a bassline from NI's Massive. The Massive bassline (main bass) has some fast single note patterns; at the moment I just copy the Massive bassline MIDI region and paste into the Sub-Bass lane so they are exact. Because, however, some drawn notes are in 16th's and even 32nd's, is it recommended to just leave a single, long note running in the sub-bass's lane every time the Massive bass plays? Can anyone recommend a method?

You can experience with this. You can have the sub bass play just the 'classic' offbeat notes, and the mid bass and high bass play the faster arpeg bassline, like in Menno de Jong ft Relocate - Spirit (Paul Miller remix). You could also have the sub bass play the same notes as your mid bass and high bass. There's no wrong or right here. Make sure the sub bass is played in the right octave though.

Thank you for the response. The track is a 131BPM progressive house track; I have a high pass sweep on the Massive bassline from about ~150Hz onwards, since the sub-bass has a lowpass filter rolling off around the same frequency. Am I on the right track here? Or should I not have Massive high-passed from the point?

Well, how does it sound? Depending on the sound, you'll either need to highpass Massive at the same point, or not. If the two sounds are supposed to blend as one, adjust the highpass so it sounds the way you want - not too separated, but also not too overpowering at any frequency.

Yeah, I agree. But since this is a 131 BPM track, I imagine it's possible that you would want the bass to do it's job, so give it a nice space in the mix, and let it breathe as much as possible.

I usually lowpass my sub bass from 130 Hz, just shave everything off from 130 Hz on, because my mid and high bassline will do that job already. But just use your ears, and dare to trust them. There are no hard rules for this. :)

you can try adjust the filter cutoff too... in the synth...
