1;30 you put in a break but no velocity changes at all ?
Imho you maximized the song way too much.
You see it on the wave too full volume almost whole song.
The volume-velocity changes are in songs to give it feeling.
This way the music is loud but without emotion.
Your max volume sound isn't even the kick 4;55 you max and no kick yet.
So i would definitely put the kick louder.
And take away the maximizer or limiter or whatever you use.
The balance is gone between the sounds cos its maxed too much
If you max it then do it on the final mix when all sounds are together in 1 mix
Then the maximizer will always put the kick on top of the mix
Now the kick is in the middle of the volume of the mix
And that messes up the overall mix imo
Mix tips
1. Put kick at full volume in the mix first always !
2. Put other sounds at volumes you like
Then you'll see the main output goes higher in volume then max of kick
This is not cos the individual sound is louder than kick
But ones added together the complete volume goes higher
Then you put the main output a lil lower to give headspace
Not too much 20% or so of max
Then the notes together can take it over the kick 20%
3. After mixing all together to 1 mix load the wav in a new setup
Or same arrangement if you got nuf cpu power
I max my cpu on arrangements so need to make new arr for mastering
On that wav i put eq and maximizer to mx the mix
The maximizer will move the overall headroom down [the spikes in wav]
And then the kick will be at the top of the peaks
If you follow this procedure then you can even use the same maximizer setting on various songs
EQ depends on your mix off course
But if you mix the raw mixes at same volumes
Then big chance you can use the same maximizer setting on all
On my un mastered vol meter i see vu lights jumping all around
On mastered version i see vu meter jumping at kick tempo
If mastered version still jumps all around then kick is too soft
Thats the way i test my mix
And turn the base knob on your mixer off course
If you can't push up the kick by quickly upping knob shortly
Like when you add a kick to a playing mix 1 time to give expression
On a bad mix you can't do that cos then your base tone is as loud as kick
Or lead is louder than kick
With some extra mastering pro mastering dudes can fix a lot
But it's best to at least get the kick as good as possible
Than the foundation of the mix at least is solid
I been working at this a lot myself
Cos i make melodic trance and layer a lot of sounds
So my songs quickly sound muddy ,too full of tones
And i found that my songs get easier to mix with the kick on top
So this is what i do to work on improving the mix
Hope its useful to some readers
This is my opinion ,so if you like your sound this way ,keep it.
It's pure taste and tips i give to try to help you to make it better.
I'm no authority or A&R so its all opinions from 1 musician to the other. |
