Working on some stuff - Take 2 (pg. 2)

I was gonna say before that it sounds like it was mixed through headphones because of how punchy the kick is and how dark it is overall. That's pretty common because headphones don't output bass for so you compensate, and after long hours of listening you turn the highs down so it's not so piercing. This is something you'd be able to tell easily with reference monitors. You know... I made music for about 10 years before I got studio monitors which was an awful, awful mistake. That's 10 years before I even understood the medium I was working with. You're making good stuff so instead of ending up with say, an entire record that's great musically but isn't at all commercially viable, do whatever you have to do and get a good deal on some reference monitors. It's really the most important thing, being able to hear what you're doing.

The phenomena you're talking about with the highs pretty much sums up my experience with cans. Only the MDR's will belt out tons of bass while seemingly compressing it into something presentable; so much so that I'm surprised by how much bass is still present, although obviously reduced, when I'm shelving and leveling it. And it just seems to have no low-end accuracy, what-so-ever.

Anyway, thanks for the insight. Proper monitors are a priority and are even on the horizon.

I do think you could work on the mix a lot man, but over all I absolutely adore the vibe. I read that you were relating it to the mischievous nature of cats but when I was listening all I could imagine was a slow train ride through Tokyo or some other amazing city at night time with nobody else on it, just you, solitary and the city lights around you, not really going any place but just sitting there and staring into the night.

Kinda pointless commenting on the mix for me (as you've stated your monitoring setup ;) ) as only an investement in gear will solve the issues that you have.

The track itself is more carefully constructed, grown up niceness.

I was missing some kind of break in there, as the groove is strong enough to make me go 'boing' after a drop that isn't there :D

I think this is absolutely the next step before I post another track. It's embarrassingly obvious that there is no proper way to do this with my current setup.

You ain't doing bad for a bloke with some toy speakers and a set of DJ cans ;)

Well according to the cool people here, I near an ear op, because I really like this mix a lot. So warm and full of late night bar life.

It's a toffee hot mix, nice and electrical.

Am I making sense?

Maybe some minor eq cuts, to get rid of too much mid competetion going on.

I know what people mean by the kcik, but on the other hand it's kinda stylish and different. Maybe separate the kick and low mids / bass slightly.

As for bringing out the highs - possibly a slight bit of air, but dont go making this shrill and plastic man.

In terms of content, a lovely flowing frolick of a listen - you ought to make tracks for surf shops man.

The only thing I would do is on those omnipresent shuffle cymbals - consider running them through some phaser automation set to bery slow phase just to move them around a bit. Maybe filter ins and outs on them too.

Greta work bud, your the I'd suck.

I like this track!

I'm trying to get into producing myself, but I have crappy Logitech computer speakers and Grado SR60 headphones. Yeah, they're good headphones, but they're still headphones.

Come on Eddie, just pay a pro engineer to clean this up and a label will pick it up. Everybody's doing it! Then you can be one of the guys everyone in MD makes fun of! :p

Seriously, though, good work. Would love to hear this while driving around at night.

Thanks, Quazar.

I've already written my galactic meltdown for the thread in Music Discussion, which starts off in a flattering light but has more established forum members picking apart the areas of my productions I consistently fall short of paying attention to. I'm planning on having a massive misunderstanding concerning an otherwise innocuous comment, put up in my defense by none other than MSZ, that is so banal and seething with over-cooked, egocentric self-importance that, even if you multiplied Guetta by jon the dentist, you wouldn't come close to the supernova I've concocted.
