This should go in another thread but while we're on the topic of helping out, is anyone here on Kiva?

and also while we're on the topic, how about :

http://www.energyincommon.org

this is a microfinancing site which focuses on providing microloans to people who need clean and alternative energy sources, in particular. and you can earn tax credits in the form of carbon offsets by way of your loans :) Kind of one step better than kiva in that it helps people and helps the environment too.

this was started by a couple of friends who i went to school with, and i did the design and some of the initial front end development of the website

A great idea but I'd be hesitant to participate in that given that I've never heard of it.

On a side note, their page has a 'Be a Fan' link for FB but it points to a group instead (which is scheduled to be archived).

Capitalizt do you want to spearhead this with more detail in a new thread + full instructions to get started + join the TA team? I'll then sticky it... if you're not up for it maybe someone else is but it's a good idea so thanks for bringing this back to the forefront :D

i vote YES!

Why would I want to support lame as computational biologists who are to cheap to afford some decent hardware for their useless research. There is a reason why the department doesn't give them the 10.000 bucks it costs to buy a powerful GPU cluster. Because what they do is good for nothing.
You do not help with the curing of cancer by this. All you do is help some fag publish a paper.

Obviously a little more pricy than asking people to join your cloud computing project and telling them some nice story about how it helps little children *sob* suffering from leukemia *sob*.
