| Why is it you think I won't make it? Everybody starts somewhere.....just because I'm trying to start out with a less expensive set up don't mean I will suck......I'm actually pretty in good at music composition and who's to say I won't blow any big names outta the water with a given amount of time? Nobody is the answer......nobody knows jack about what will happen in the future....... |

There are few things that I wish people would've told me from the beginning.
1) If you can play riffs via a keyboard - awesome! Do it. If not, concentrate on drawing out your own. Make a killer phrase. I'm talking about the meat of your song and buld that mutha like a mutha. Put in rises, drops, and change up percussion.
2) Learn everything you can about music. Chord Progressions, Synthesizers, sounds, modulations, patching.
3) Song progression - structure. Very important. Pick a genre (in this case Trance. Open up your favorite dj program. One that shows you the wave form of the entire track. Take a desktop picture of it and start bulding an image database of all your favorites. Its what I'm doing now so I can create sounds that fit at the beginning of sets versus buid-up tracks, and ending songs.
4) When I first started I thought I would create the entire drum track first. I'd want to build all the patterns in my drum sequencer before even laying down a bassline or riff. Do not do this. Its gotten so much easy just to lay down a simple 4/4 kick. Then pound out a riff, bass, and then bring the other percussion elements up around everything else. It also simplified drum pattern changes and build ups.
5) Concentrate on creating your own rises and falls. (if you need help) its pretty easy. Draw triplets or quadrouplets) rising or falling from the first bass c all the way up to high c and tweak out the waveforms and modulations.
6) Its okay to use MIDI tracks. Although I discourage this. And I'd recomemend being entirely original. Sometimes inporting a midi and messigng around is acceptable.
7) There are full Midi tracks available w/ all your elements. Bass, Riff, and most importantly progression. Try it.
8) One of the easiest ways I'm beginning to create tracks is by doing something like this:
explanation:
Pick out a basic sound. A simple piano, maybe a triangle, or a saw wave and create all your riff, bassline, rhythm, and anything else that makes your track sound good in one part. Then extract those elements into different devices creating using different sounds. If you look at the picture, I have the bassline, rhythm, and riff, plus some other cool sounding things all being played by the same device. To get the full sound. Then I'm taking that entire sample, and copying it into another device, deleting the other notes that aren't needed.
you'll then end up w/ something like this:

here's a picture of how to create a rise. Do the opposite for a fall. But use "noise".
Also, use Equalization! I can't tell you how cool it is to be able to put your sounds in different frequencies creating a better cleaner sound. Integrate this part into your production methodology frequently and often.
By no means am I pro. But if someone were to have done this for me I think I'd be off to a much quicker start. But these are also things I've learned and may or maynot be helpful to you.
I wish you all the best! =) |

| Honestly I don't want to compete.... Example.......I live a tattoo artist lifestyle and that's the last thing tattoo shops want is competition between each other we all try to get along....but even then when you are not competing with one another....someone always ends up being the "better".... Wether it be due to lack of communication skills or creativity or even advertisement.....that's what I meant by blow big names out of the water......that's how the world works wether people face the fact or not......and I figure with enough time and effort I could create something that people everywhere who enjoy trance will listen to it and say...." wow this is really making me feel free" ...something iv thought to myself quite a few times while Listening to certain songs. I want that reaction out of people and I just want to know what I need....thank you for your replies.....I don't want to come in trying to be a big shot dj from the start......but when people tell me I won't or can't do something I take offense and it makes me wanna prove I can do it even more....hence my comment on my last reply. |

I think its totally cool that, that's what you want to do. Strive to be the best. That's what I do. I can't settle for mediocrity nor will I. Even though I'm probably not ever going to "blow other dj's/producers out of the water" that's not the point. The point is to be able to listen to a track you created and be like, Damn I made that, or listen to a set and be like that's perfect. But regardless of how competitive it is, you can be the best dj in the world and noone will even know your name. They won't care. You can be the best producer making huge tracks and noone will care. Its just about everything thing else as it is music. So, I'd encourage you to have the attitude you have. em! Its what you want to do so do it. And the second you no longer receive satisfaction from doing what your doing- stop! Until then, as long as you love music, djing, and making or producing music, do that to. |

You seem like a good guy, and you have what sounds like solid drive, so the best advice I can give is to just keep at it. Also, absorb as many Youtube tutorial videos that you can stand. There will be at least one video covering anything you want to learn. It is how I learned a lot of things myself. I've been at this now for many years and I still learn new things every month from reading magazines, forums, and watching videos. The learning process never ends so just be a sponge and never be afraid to try new things. Never get stuck in a comfort zone of using the same safe things over and over. Constantly experiment. There might be a better way to do something or a new undiscovered tool or technique.
I wish you the best of luck! |

You do have the correct mindset. I am sorry I misjudged you as some random guy who had an impulsive idea in the lines of "I am going to be a new god of trance!"....
With commitment and consistency, there is no limit. Your motives seem to be straight, you said you have experience in music composition, well that's a ing huge advantage from the start. Every start is uber tough, however. But I think you already know that.. As in any art, you have to seriously devote yourself to it and go at your own pace. You have a lifetime ahead of you, so you might actually accomplish something.
When you get your gear, learn the boring things first. After that you can experiment and do your own magic with it. Learn every synth's characteristics and decide what they're best for. Don't just use Nexus for everything cause you will be stuck with "that" characteristic sound and your tracks will sound monotonously similar to each other.
As it has already been said, youtube is an awesome resource for learning and finding new tricks. For example, somebody on this forum posted this playlist..
Just keep going no matter what. It's a bumpy, but strangely pleasurable ride. Best of luck. :) |
