As a way of learning to produce i'm trying to copy a track of Cosmic Gate.

Can someone explain to me what i am doing wrong trying to get the massive kick of "find yourself" by Cosmic Gate?

When i listen to my own version, my bass has a higher volume (according to my master level) but the cosmic version sounds much louder! How is that possible? How can i get mine louder?

Copying "Find Yourself"?

In any case, trying to recreate songs is a great way of learning. It's what we do anyway (how else do we know whether our kick and bass fit together, or whether the hihat is too loud? It's all based on the music we've heard). This way is just more focused, and a faster way of learning.

I haven't listened to the sample (I can't while I'm at work) - analysers don't tell the full story. Potentially the kick and bass in your version have too many sub frequencies (or too much content anywhere in the spectrum), meaning the song's overall level hits the 0 dB ceiling before your song is "competitively loud".

So yes, it may be objectively as loud, but subjectively it isn't, since certain frequencies are under-/ over-represented.

1) Pick samples which fit together well
2) Set appropriate levels
3) Filter/ cut out unneeded parts of each sound
4) If needed, apply (sidechain or straight) compression to sounds/ groups
5) Apply a limiter to the overall mix (either as you go, or when the song is finished, it's your decision) to drive the gain up cleanly

The longer you keep at it, and keep paying attention to the things you need to improve, the better you'll get at it.

add a little sidechain to that bass.
you kick doesnt snap enough at the top mate. listen to a HQ version of the track you are copying and it snaps at the top more almost metallic or something

your bass is filtered too much and is missing white noise, you've got wrong samples and i think your notes are a little off

my notes are off, but that's not a problem. It doesnt have to be an exact copy. I'm focussing on the kick now, that i'd like to have just as loud.

I've been trying to use less samples to create the kick, cut a lot of unnecessary frequencies but it only got worse. With a high release on the low part of the kick i get an almost equal loud kick, but then it doesnt sound that 'narrow' :S

I'm kinda not the person to be offering advice but I'll throw a suggestion in. Turn down all your elements- your synth, bass, and all your percussion elements. Then, turn up your kick to where you want it. It should be easy with everythign turned down (except the kick). Then bring up everything around it. I'd also watch the velocity of the kick. Just concentrate on the volume. Then rematch your percussion elements, bass, then sythn around the newly leveled kick. I'd also, just for safe measure throw in an equalizer. Just to balance everything out. And if that doesn't work, use a plugin to amplify the kick. In reason that could be a maximizer and/or compressor.
