Help picking out a DAC

I'm looking to buy an outboard DAC in the sub $1,000 (612, 700) price range. I know little to nothing about the market, popular brands or what specifications to look at so I was hoping someone could help me out.

I pretty much only need left & right outputs for my monitors and a headphone output. An S/PDIF coaxial output would be nice too.

As for inputs I really only need 1 to record synths.

I'll be using it on a 64-bit windows 7 setup with USB being my best options of connection (USB 2 or 3)

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I use Cubase 5 & Ableton Live. I will likely only be using 1 hardware synth in the forseeable future. I won't be recording any vocals or live instruments. My monitors are a pair of Digital Phase AP-7s connected to an old Alesis RA-100 amp. Also I don't need to spend anywhere near $1000 dollars that was just my budget roof haha, I would be happy with spending much less if it will get me the hardware. Thanks for your help!

Echo Audiofire 2

It ticks all the boxes; separate headphone output, 2 monitor outs, midi, s/pdif, 2 inputs. It is firewire though.

This would be my second choice if USB connection is critical...

Focusrite Saffire 6

those are some good choices and a couple of TA's have those

I recommend Mytek DA and Lavry Black

Sadly I don't have any firewire ports on my motherboard so of the 2 I would probably have to go for the Focusrite Saffire 6. As for the Mytek, Lavry Black and Crane Song... they are too godly for my gimp bank account haha. Also lacking headphones encrusted with enough jewels to be worth more than a human life

Thanks for the recommendations, I appreciate it

To add to what CalvP said about the Duet 2: whenever I read suggestions for that interface,
the RME Babyface gets mentioned fairly often as an alternative.
Has about the same feature set, price-range plus it's Windows compatible.
Not as sleek looking though, but that's a minor detail.

Ended up getting a roland quad capture, seems like a good purchase
