OOPS!
What makes a bass a bass? There seem to be so many different variations of what can be considered basslines nowadays. I don't understand. Can the bass basically be any sound, just at a lower pitch?

Exactly. Bass is also a region (as in Bass/Treble, or Bass/Alto/Soprano), not just an instrument (as in Bass/ Drums/ Guitar).
