Preferring a certain "sound" across genres

Since I was pretty young, my favorite music has generally been stuff that has a certain "ambient" quality or texture to it. My girlfriend says that I like "floaty" music; maybe that's as good a descriptor as any.

Does anyone else find that they generally prefer certain textures or types of "ambience" regardless of what genre / style you might be "into" at the moment? If so, do you have any ideas about what made you seek out that particular sound, or is it something you "just like?"

I think it's very evident from my sets that whether I'm playing trance, prog, breaks, drum 'n bass, dubstep, techno or ambient there is a consistent sound and atmosphere. I might be an eclectic DJ genre-wise, but in terms of mood and effect I'm quite narrow.

But I think it's pretty obvious that most people here are going to have a soft spot for spacey, futuristic, atmospheric sounds. It's a trance forum.

Yeah, dreamy and atmospheric. Sometimes euphoric.

If it trips the same part of my brain that enjoys film and video game soundtracks, I'll probably enjoy it. :)

Same for me as you guys. I always prefer soft, deep sounds, melodies, ambiance, euphoria...etc.

used to think i did, i was rather obsessed musical interpretations of depth and space, particularly in the qualities i heard in them that i perceived as meditative. i used to be quite interested in music as soundscape, dreamworld, etc.

but these days my listenings-to and goings-out are all over the map.
sometimes i like noise, harshness, striation, other times ambience, fluidity, smoothness. generally i like everything between. i probably prefer the fluid stuff to the disruptive and noisy stuff for the most part, still, though.

i attribute my lessened interest in the escapism of the musical dreamworld to the fact that my whole waking life has become my own dreamworld.

dark and sinister with melodic overlays. No specific genre just good music.......

I think I like a "special" sound or feeling about a track but I still haven't figured out what it is.

I really enjoy this track except for the cheesy "jingle"-like sounds...

at 4:44 that "sound" comes in

I've definitely got a soft spot for deep, reverbed, atmospheric, bassy stuff. Always had. But also definitely have evolved my musical tastes in terms of moods, not just in terms of genres. I like far subtler emotions nowadays (no more supersaw chorus lines, thank you), I like it a lot funkier than I used to, I like more organic sounds whereas I used to like more artificial, synthesized sounds.

Perhaps do still have a narrow band of sounds I like, just moved in a different direction. But I think that even if it's still narrow, it's wider than it used to be.

I enjoy certain sound structures that either follow a very technical approach, or a very melodic approach (or sometimes both). A lot of times, I search for sounds and ideas that carry a particular energy that I have never heard before. Psytrance and its subgenres offer a lot of great opportunities to discover interesting soundscapes.
