Well, I tend to put a reverb on a synth, render it, and then reverse it.

I have a lead that sounds a bit different in tone from the hook...

Contrast can be a good thing in many contexts. Sometimes bringing it in slowly like a frightened little works, but often times bringing it big with no forewarning and just smacking the listening in the face with it works better.

Another trick is to hint at the lead. Try bringing in some small snippets or motifs from the main lead earlier on to prepare the listener for it - for example, play the snippets from the lead during the main hook, but only during pauses in the main hook. Or try the old variations on a theme approach - have an instrument that is already playing (e.g., a pad) start to play the lead melody, or a variation of it, in the upper register during the section leading up to the lead, and maybe even fade the new lead in under it.

Good example of that:

Cool thanks! I feel, for this tune, the hook and lead styles are too different to have them near each other. The hook is a bright bell and the lead is a balearic, retro, horny (lol) sawish thing. I'll definitely experiment with those ideas in the future.

You might just want to post the track in question.

for the moment [rough mix v1 preview] by blueshiftmusic

lead comes in at 1:20, a bit of hook comes 1:50

Yeah, I hear what you're saying now and these two leads probably wouldn't work together if played simultaneously. Your approach works pretty well for this track IMO. Cool track, too - I like the vibe dude!

Ah ha, this is the exact thing I'm toying with on my latest track (in promotion section, lol). I am concerned the mario lead comes in right off the bat in the breaks with no warning and don't know if it's right. Usualy I would offer hints earlier, mmm.

I wont post it here as I don't want to whore it up.
