Hi, I have been Djing for the last 2 years and i have started producing the last few months with FL studio and I was wondering which headphones to get between the DT990 and the sony MDR-SA5000. if any one has previous experience with either heaphones pls give me your opinion as i cant make the decision. thanks in advance
Dj Mark
Yes i understand you opinion it is just that i dont like AKG and i have come to decide after days of research that these 2 pairs are the best for me i just wanted to be sure wich one of the 2 is better for production for house music.

I would take a look at the BeyerDynamic DT880s before deciding on the 990s. Both are great headphones (I own the 880s and have used the 990s), but the 880s consistently get better reviews. They're very similar, except that the 990s have an open back design, whereas the 880s have a semi-open back design.

As Calvin mentioned, the Sonys that you are considering are not designed for production work. Sennheiser, AKG, Audio Technica, and BeyerDynamic are the four big names in production headphones for many very good reasons, so I wouldn't discount them.

Finally, a common mistake that DJs make when looking for headphones is that they often want them to sound good and usually fail to understand that they need to sound accurate in order for your mixes to transfer to other systems.

the thing about the sony's is that everywhere i have read reviews about them and seen specs everyone say's that they are very nutral and sound very accurate and have very great detail. that is why i consider them because of what i have read they seem to be what someone needs for production, i was considering the sennheiser hd-598 but i heard a few rumors about cracking and ruled them out, so the beyerdymamics are for production specificaly? the sony's say they are monitoring headphones.

You have to look at model, not just brand. I highly recommend reading this:

There are some very good budget headphones for mixing suggested in that article.
Dj Mark
No there is nowhere I can try them out. I am leaning towards the DT990 but just not sure yet.
Dj Mark
Also if you look in to the sa5000's you will see they are not DJ headphones but they are professional studio monitors

The DT990 headphones are released in 32ohms 250ohms and 600ohms. what is the difference. All I know about that is that the lower the ohms the less power the headphones need to be powered. pls correct me if im wrong and give me your opinion

I can't speak for the DT 990s, perhaps they are better, but I use the DT 770s and they are not what I had hoped for. If I could go back, I would not have bought them. Maybe its just me, but I can't accurately produce with them, something I was hoping I could do after having a son, and having to keep the volume down on everything.

The DT770s are a closed back design, which should be avoided for mixing. They're great for tracking because they minimize spillage into the mic, but terrible for accuracy and bass response. And, they sound nothing like the DT990s or DT880s.

This point can't be stressed enough, yet people always seem to overlook it: generally speaking, closed back headphones should not be used for serious production/mixing work.

Good to know, Cryo. I simply got these off a recommendation by two producer friends and didn't really look into things myself. You live and learn.

Well after 7 days of research and looking in to every little detail I could possibly find on the web I just placed my order on ebay on a pair of beyerdynamics DT990 600 ohm headphones. i would like to thank you guys also for the help. I think i made a good decision for producing with headphones antil I can get some Monitor HQ speakers. but as i am living in Greece at the moment and will be moving back to Australia to live in 1 and a half months i dont want to have to pay to ship new speakers i will just buy them there. Now I need to buy a good amplifier dac for my 600 ohm headphones. I was looking at the NuForce uDAC-2 because i have heard good things and it is also not too expencive. i would love a good opinion though on anything in that price range and would appreciate it very much
