Is this a common practice for those desperate to get gigs who are willing to pay for them instead of actually earning them ?
If you know names .. fire away ...

I've heard of djs playing for free but not paying to play. I imagine if a dj can bring something to the table in terms of attendance of friends or helping out with social networking that could help their cause.

I dunno....
Does paying a PR team to whore a name about the internet for publicity count?
There's always the guys that will be given a set if the bring 'x' amount of mates to a gig and are able to sell them tickets.

Sounds like a scam, like when so-called modeling agencies "hire" girls who could never be models and then insist they pay the agency photographer $5000.00 for a portfolio shoot.
Are people actually doing this, colin, or did you just have a thought so big that had to be emptied onto the internet?

I've seen my fair share of Kickbacks these days in the club scene
a DJ will get paid then sometime later the DJ will give back some of his pay back to the promoter

I've heard of people doing this, but generally, the promoters engaging in this practice throw horrible parties and the DJs involved are equally as bad. The only "payment" that you should ever have to give to a promoter is support.

I'm sure it happens, was a common thing in the 80s with rock clubs too. They would force bands to buy blocks of tickets to their own shows, then it was up to the band to sell the tickets. People desperate to get a start or getb their name out would do it, I'm sure.
It's pretty bad as it encourages brand/name recognition over any musical ability.
Nirvana's 'Stay Away' from Nevermind was originally called 'Pay to Play' and was about this practice.

It's standard for a DJ or band to get a gig if they can bring a certain number of friends through the door. But actually handing over cash to play is stupid, and you'd have to be extremely gullible to do it. You may as well put your own night on if you're prepared to lose money to play out.
