Hi all,

I was hoping to look for some guidance regarding headphones. I really want a subwoofer and studio monitors, but I will probably be evicted out of my apartment in a week LOL! Any way, having said that, I am looking for a pair of headphones that are good for mixing and mastering in a studio (not for DJ'ing). I heard that the Sennheiser HD 25-1 II Headphones are great for this. Any thoughts or reccomendations would be great! Thanks in advance.

Thank you!!!!

i also just purchased a pair of HD25-1 II for use for DJing and producing on the road. I don't think they'll be the "end result" cans you're after but they are by far the the best pair i've found for DJing & producing as they are fairly flat. Unlike all the other DJ can's where hte first 2 octaves just goes OOOOOOOOOOOOOMmmmMPPhhh, OOooooommpph and no tone is actually recognizable.

I use the HD-25s for DJ'ing & i absolutely love them! however for mixing/mastering they will not suffice as they are closed back. You need to look for open or at least semi-open cans:)

This will answer all your questions...

Headphone Shootout

Obligatory warning:

***get speakers, don't use a subwoofer, don't master on headphones***

, they're on to me :toothless

Last sentence in that quote is the mantra. Some people (somehow) mix only on headphones but mastering should not even be attempted. , it shouldn't be attempted on a perfect setup if you're not 100% sure of what you're doing let alone with headphones.

I dont think they can beat hd 650... :D

Hmmmm I'm not sure man, I thought closed cans are better (a lot of people told me that) since they give you isolation when you're mixing/producing on headphones?

Can anyone tell me which of these are suitable for mixing/producing?

AKG K99

AKG K81

AKG K77

AKG K44

?

As mentioned, I'm not looking for DJ headphones, I'm looking for producing/mixing headphones feedback is appreciated :)

I actually ended up getting the KRK KNS-8400 Studio Headphones.

These headphones were exactly what I was looking for. They are a perfect substitute for my studio monitors when I need to be quiet. They translate very well to my monitors and car speakers without me having to "re-tweak" the bass so often. Keep in mind, these headphones are VERY flat. The bass is not loud at all, but you can hear it in there very well mixed with the crisp mids & hi's. Super light weight and comfortable as well. Highly reccomended!!

i've got my eyes on the AKG Q701 right now. seems to iron out a bit of the upper mids according to its headphone graph and a small bass bost compared to the 702, and a tad more open up top.

i would imagine that would be more suited for dance music as i hear the 701 AND 702 are quite bass light and have really forward upper mids sometimes. perhapes the Q701 would not be as critical as its counterparts but should still be ample to get a strong mix.

i use AKG K240 Studio myself and they have really helped me improve my mixing over time. they are not very critical, but that makes them fun and inviting rather than up in your face and patronizing. i hear the K701/702 is alot better for fine details but can be harsh and bass light and i think the Q701 fixes those issues, making them more fun for profudicing and once learned they should be able to get you very strong mixdowns, if not flawless.

Its kind of like the middle man of K240 and 701/2

jsut my speculation.

One thing though: AKG knows sound.

, yeah I have been trying to decide between the 701 and 702 myself, everyone says their pretty much identical , but they both lack bass...and not in a good way? although the 701 might have the upper hand. in that price range ..they seem to be the Ferraris of the bunch though. I am looking to go all headphones since my neighbours have been getting annoyed. :nervous:

the DT880's seem decent to.
