Organizing your samples...

So over the years I've amassed a large quantity of samples. They are getting kind of messy. I would say that my folder organization is pretty clean and neat, it's arranged in order such that there are folders for sample packs i've bought to drum machines, to remix packs.
The thing is i still get lost in them.
I've been thinking of just dragging all my samples into generic folder names like "kicks" and "loops" and "hats" etc.
What's the best way to organize folders iyo? |

I don't have a gigantic sample collection (yet!), but I swear I'd get so lost if I were to organise my samples that way. I generally leave mine in the packs/folders they extract to, I just find that makes it easier for myself to locate specific styles of sounds I may be after. I also have a few generic folders for one-off samples I stumble upon.
Dunno if this would work for everyone, but does for me atm. |

My entire drum/percussion library (300+ GB) is imported, categorized, and tagged by devloper, genre, character, etc. In Maschine's browser, so finding and auditioning them is a piece of cake. |

That's what I've done. I went back through and put all my singles into a folder w/ them labled, bass drums, kicks, hi-hats, snares & claps, and also FX.
I try and keep my loops separate because I am a Reaon user but hate REX. There's not a song I make that has a single instance of it. But I do like to splice up some of my loops and bring em into ReDrum. Then I get to sequence them w/ a lot more control I think.
It was somewhat of a tedious task to do so, but yea, I think you have the right idea. Keep singles separate, and confined to their own folder. And put your loops someplace else. |

I keep them the way they come with the sample cds. I usually can remember what sound I'm looking for in each pack. Just takes time to memorize. |

As people have said, as long as you know where to find things, there are a number of ways to organise them.
For myself, I have separate subfolders for kicks, hihats, percs, claps/snares, FX - so when I buy e.g. a Vengeance sample set, the folders on the CD/ download get sorted into the various subfolders I have. |

I have one level with a load of folders and subfolder, one of them is called Electro Groove, and that's where I keep all the stuff i use on a "daily" basis. 7 or 8 sample cds, my collection of obscure movie samples that i sample myself, plus some other stuff that seemed to want to go there. works pretty allright for me, but i could do with a cleanup in the other folders.. for instance, i have one called (roughly translated) "samples that i gave to Preben, but then I formatted the wrong hard drive and had to strike a deal with Preben to get them back". |
