ripping some old vinyls & tapes. what frequency range should be filtered/attenuated? any other other advice on cleaning up the audio would be excellent as well.

There are tools which analyse a section of the audio where there is "silence", to work out the noise profile. They then apply this to the overall audio to try to remove the noise.

In any case, you can run a section of "silence" through an analyser yourself to see what frequencies the tape hiss/vinyl noises are operating at.

buff the plastic up real good before applying the needles.

i have the nitty gritty record cleaning machine with a bunch of brushes and solutions

for software you can use a "noise reduction tool" that is on soundforge, you gotta buy/install it separately though, if you do buy.

thanks, ill try these techniques. when i tossed the ripped file into a spectrum analyzer the hiss covered nearly the whole range. mebbe just getting rid of the strong signals will help but i don't want to gut the sound.
