just a quick one
I have a imac i7 2.9 with a 1tb internal drive and am looking for a couple of external drives to use for sample librarys / sample and also one for projects.
I have just one the one firewire 800 but as these can be daisy chained together this is not an issue.
As you probably know 800 drives are nearly double the cost to a USB 2 and wondered if I would be ok with USB.
I am using the internal drive just for install etc to keep it clean.
1 250gb firewire 800 drive which I already have for samples or something as its only small. I have about 150gb of third party samples so thought this would be good for that.
1 1tb drive for projects
1 tb drive for just sample librarys such as omnisphere etc.
the last 2 above, I dont own yet and want to know what is the best plan of action for what to purchase. I only really want to spend about 120 on 2 drives which only means I can afford UBS 2.
I only really use soft synths and hardly any recording in to be honest if that makes a differance.
Has anybody been in a simular situation with an imac and what have they done.
I will be open to ideas of planning the best system for my use.
thanks guys |

Usb drives are fine but personally, I believe drives are something you don't go cheap on. Cheap drives are often slow, do annoying like go in to sleep mode all the time, have bad data transfer rates and don't last as long.
Remember this stuff has data on it that you will be seriously pissed to lose if it dies and you haven't been tidy with your backups.
For Mac, get either Lacie or G-raid. I just got a 500gb G-raid mini (usb2 and FW800 connectivity for more flexibility) and it cost me $100. The thing is blisteringly fast, and so far rock solid. It's also got a fast FW bus, so if I ever want to daisy chain, I'm not going to have data pass through issues (can happen on slow drives). We use lacie all day long at the studio, some drives being nearly 5 years old (constant high transfer use) and out of 50 drives over that period, only 3 have ever had problems and in fairness they were quite abused.
Don't go cheap - if you're putting sample libraries on there you need them to be fast and reliable. Same with your projects.
If you can't afford two, then just get one good one. Shop around online, don't buy in a store and you'll save some money. |

^^ To much work. Just get a fw drive. As mentioned above, make sure the drive doesn't go to sleep. It will do annoying when u try to access each sample. |

Actually you can do that on the imac i7 (on some you can't). You just need the right adapter to hold the drive and then just find the step by step guide on how to dismantle the mac on ifixit.com - I think it's actually a good idea to buy the tools from them as well ,as they do the job perfectly. The only other thing to check is what bus the optical drive bay has (sata 2 or 3) and then buy the right drive for the best performance. |
