Hello fellow TAs

My honey and I are flying into LAX on Tues 30th and driving up the coast to SFO, leaving on the 5th.

We have first night accomodation booked and the 2 nights in Santa Barbara (whales woot) but after that we are not sure where is best to stay - we were going to do one night in Monterey/Carmel and then two nights in SF. Any tips?

Some non-SF stuff:

There are a lot of shops on State Street in SB, with the pier at the end of the street. You can take a trolley up State Street for a quarter.

Solvang is just north of SB. It is a cute little Dutch-style town and there are a lot of wineries nearby. Also, if you take Hwy 1 (which I assume you are since you will be driving up the coast) there is an ostrich farm on the road between Hwy 1 and Solvang.

You can take a small detour off Hwy 1 and go to Casa de Fruta.

Farther up north there is Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world. It may smell a bit as you drive through the town.

In the city of Fairfield (near SF), you can visit the Jelly Belly factory.

being that you'll be in SF during labor day weekend... i suggest possibly staying a little bit outside of the city(say near SFO) and driving in (15-20mins) or taking the public transportation (BART) into the city and from there u can take trolley/bus...

SF has great public transportation unlike LA

if you get a hotel in the city..most places charge you an additional fee per night to park your car(anywhere between $20-$40)

unless money isnt an object to you.. :)

SF on the big weekends is a little more pricier but the convenience might be worth it in the end. If you looking to party that weekend, check out

It wouldn't work. Ruby Skye nearby would swallow your EDM crowd. Likewise, Ruby is too big for a 21+ weeknight party. A full house at Vessel is like 1/3 full at Ruby. The thing is if your place is not more than half full by 11:30pm, it would appear empty to the peeps and they would start to leave.

the great thing about that place is it goes off on a weeknight. Gets rid of the "tunnel/bridge" people :)
