The "Ibiza-ification" of pop

I missed this article which came out back in April, but it really sums up perfectly my feelings towards whats been happening on the radio lately.

if its so generic and cheesy, why am i liking LMFAO's party rock anthem and other tunes like it? MOST of it is just bad taste, but there are a few out there that are actually good. |

Yeah, I've noticed this development as well. Mainstream radio is full of huge breakdowns with one-finger stadium riffs, bursts of white noise, kickdrums and gimmicky noises now. Even pop-rappers who'd be up in arms about all that "techno" are doing it now. Ironically, this transfers all the formulaic problems that dance music has suffered from for years into the charts. They now sound even more generic and samey than ever before, which I didn't think was possible.
Personally, I can't listen to it for very long purely from a sound quality-related standpoint. It's all just so over-compressed and heavy on midrange noises that it wears my ears out. |

While not as eloquently/thought-through as Sand Leaper put it, I had the same thought earlier today listening to the radio.
I have to be faced drunk to be able to bear it, or dance to it. |

| if you had a line graph showing the gradual increase in ravey sounds in pop over the years, you'd see a huge spike upwards starting around 2010. that's when they really started laying it on thick. wait, would it really be a line always increasing? or would it resemble a stock market, with peaks and valleys? either way, the peak on the graph we're experiencing lately is off the charts. |
