What do you guys recommend?
I'm in the 90045.
I think cablevision is an option but I'd rather not go with them, as they were throttling me back home.
I don't need a composite tv/phone one either, if that comes into play. I just need internet with good speed to maximize my movie pirating experience.
jk
but seriously... |

When you say wireless you mean as in satellite? (ala HughesNet)
Avoid at all cost. Your pings/response time and everything will be horrible. Should only be a last resort. It's why they market rural areas.
Just get DSL or AT&T U-Verse if you don't want Cablevision's internet.
You don't have to have phone service to get DSL or anything.
And isn't it Time Warner in Westchester? Their cable might suck, but I was happy with their internet service overall. Pretty sure it's TWC in that area (my fiance has lived in Westchester in the last few years, and her mom lived in another area of 90045 as well). |

| Cable is usually way faster than DSL. Time Warner is the cable company in my area. |

Yeah, you're right it is time warner.
So I should forgo my 'stick-it-to-the-man-and-go-with-the-smaller-guys' ethos and just give time warner a call? |

i have time warner cable at home. i use them for ISP only. it's been super reliable in the year or so i've been with them.
avoid at&t at all costs. their service is inconsistent and their customer service sucks. |

I had the opposite experience. I had TW for internet and very unreliable. Now, I have AT&T Uverse and it kicks ass.
They both their ups and downs. |

TWC's internet seems to be dependent on where you live (because a lot of their area were other cable companies before w/ less than stellar infrastructures).
AT&T U-Verse is one that everyone was saying good things about at first, but I usually only hear bad things about their customer service these days. (typically happens when service grows)
There's also Verizon Fios. It might be available where you are. Usually hear good things about them, but have heard more negative things lately. Not a whole lot, though.
If you want internet only from a company that provides multiple things (AT&T w/ phone + DSL, TWC with Cable + Road Runner Internet) and just want internet, it's typically about $10/mo more than it would be if you had both the internet and something else they offered. |

| You haven't explained what you meant by wireless. If mobile, all carriers have internet only options, there is Clear, Time Warner has a mobile option too. If just wifi, then any broadband will do as long as you use a wireless router. Most will give you a discount for the first year and / or a free wireless router, especially if you shop through a reseller. I've had a good experience with Time Warner until I moved, and now bandwidth from my node seems to be shared amongst too many of my neighbors. Time Warner charges you an additional $5 fee if you don't have any other service from them. However, if you already get basic cable as part of rent / association fees then you are considered a "bulk" customer and you don't have to pay this fee. Also, you will be renting your cable modem; you have the option of buying your own but the savings are very minimal and I think time-limited, and with the rate the modems go bad it's better to do so anyway. The best reviews I've heard are for AT&T's UVerse and Verizon's FIOS, although AT&T has now started capping traffic to 200GB monthly. Another advantage of cable internet is you are not bound by a contract and can start / stop service at any time; just go to your local cable company and pick up / drop off the modem. |

Meaning I get the maximum speed during non peak hours but it drops to even 1/3 at peak hours. |

| Another Time Warner pro is that it is month to month. Most others companies will try to lock you down with a contract. |

| Time Warner has been pretty good on my end. I've only had them for a month but it has been consistent and fast. I used to have AT&T U-Verse and it was good and bad. At my parents house it SUCKED but at my house it worked pretty well. So I don't know.. depends on what you'r looking for. DSL can suck if you are far from the box, Cable may suck if everyone around you has it.. so depends on your area, and what your willing to pay for. Also see if they are even available, AT&T doesn't even offer it's services on my area ( 90025 ) |

I just got TWC installed earlier today.
I'm pretty unhappy with the service already.
I'm not strong enough, technically, to really work my way around all of this...
I want to say that I'm being throttled, but I felt that was more of a "if you're using too much bandwith, maybe they'll cut you back" type of thing, whereas I only now had it installed so bandwith shouldn't be an issue. Currently, if I'm running utorrent, my internet doesn't seem to work at all / works ridiculously slowly. I get 1.1 - 1.3mbps on utorrent and 'could not find server' on the internet. Running a network diagnostic thing I've found 1) "there seems to be a problem with your dns server" (it's set to 'automatically assign' and 2) "windows has confirmed that there is a problem with your connection"
I don't really know what to do. If this is going to be the order of the day I don't want to continue using this service. I think something must be improperly configured here though.
I ran glasnost for bittorrent and it read : "Your ISP appears to rate limit downloads on port 6881. In our tests, downloads on port 6881 achieved up to 3576 Kbps while downloads on port 53230 achieved up to 2514 Kbps." which doesn't make any sense to me.
But yeah, the long and short of it seems to be - i can't use the internet while utorrent is running, even though utorrent is still able to download. what. the. .
