automating hardware synth parameters from within Nuendo

Hey guys,

I have tried to get this right a few times now but keep failing.
Im trying to automate my JP8000 cutoff from within Nuendo so i dont have to physically move the synths slider. I have my JP's midi implementation chart so I know the cutoff's midi control number but I dont know how to get Nuendo to control it. I tried moving the slider while recording the midi performance to see if Nuendo would show me anything that would help but it seems it hasnt recieved the slider data because when I play the track back the cutoff remains completely open (or where I left it last on the synth). I gotta get this working otherwise I cant use my synth in any of my tracks, its so frustrating.

Any help and advice is appreciated, thanks,

1. Do you have a midi-interface?
2. Are you using midi cables?
3. Are they connected correctly (midi out pc to midi in JP8000 and midi out JP to midi in on pc)?
If 1 to 3 have been confirmed:
4. Do you receive midi information from the JP when you set record mode on? If not, check midi input settings on the channel
5. Can you change the parameters so the JP will follow automation, if not check the channel midi output settings.
6. Fixed.

That would most likely be the entire step by step guide you need to solve this. Good luck.

Hey,

1.yes
2.yes
3.yes
4. I can play the JP and Nuendo will record my performance onto its midi track (notes, velocity and aftertouch are there).
5. Im not sure I understand, change the parameters on the synth or in Nuendo? are you talking about the channel midi output settings on the synth?
6. Not yet! hehe

thanks,

Haha, at least that clears some stuff up and th emost obvious ones are seemingly ok.

at point 5 I'm talking about Nuendo. Do you have the Nuendo midi channel you are using set to output the midi signals towards your JP? I'm assuming you have. In that case you should be able to automate the midi CC #74 parameter (should be the JP8000 filter cutoff) and the JP should respond by folling your cutoff movement/curve. If not you probably have incorrect midi-out settings in your channel in Nuendo...

Sometimes it helps to flip through all the 16 midi channels as well in the midi output settings.

Also check if your JP has some incoming signal light somewhere so you can see it is receiving midi input signals at any point. Otherwise keep playing chords from your Nuendo channel and change the midi settings until it works.

Furthermore it could be worthy checking if the JP8000 actually accepts midi input. Some synths have a menu which allows you to deny/ignore any midi input. If that's the case no wonder it's not working :). I'm not sure the JP has this option but it this wouldn't be any proper helping going on if I wouldn't note the possibility.

Hope this helps.

Hey,

the midi send/recieve channel on the JP is set to 1, same as on the Midi track in nuendo. The JP is receiving and playing all the note data from the midi track in nuendo so it seems the synth and nuendo are communicating, I just dont know what to do in nuendo to automate the cutoff on the synth. Im gonna try again tonight. If you see a computer leaving the earths atmosphere tonight its just me putting my foot through my machine.

will let ya know how I go, thanks again mate,

Just fold out the midi channel and automate midi CC #74 for the filter ;)

Oh, just to add, from what I remember (it's been a few years) in Nuendo preferences there's a midi filter, in which you can select tick boxes for what midi information is allowed to pass. Find that and make sure everything is clear to pass.

Also, it's one thing recording note data but make sure there's nothing weird with your automation settings in Nuendo.

At least count yourself lucky that the cutoff is a dedicated midi channel - the Electribes mostly use NRPN midi as defaults so you have painstakingly map everything yourself to corresponding midi channel values.

Same here, it's been long, so tips might be a good indication where to long but could be somewhat inaccurate.

Does your JP8000's filter respond when you draw the automation into the MIDI clip manually (using CC74 for the filter cutoff)? If it's playing the notes you send it, it should react to the automation messages you're sending as well, unless there's a setting to disable that in either Cubase or on your JP8000.

hey guys,

tried again last night with no luck, this is killing me!

If I touch and move my finger along the JP's ribbon controller, Nuendo picks it up on the midi track and records the ribbons data. Even if im not playing any notes but simply touching the ribbon the midi in meter in nuendo bounces happily showing activity. Nuendo recorded the ribbon data as "breath" data.

I tried to fold out the midi track and automate CC74 (which in nuendo is labelled "cc74 brightness") but it did nothing. I have a funny feeling the JP isnt transmitting the signal cause when I move the slider the midi in meter in nuendo doesnt register any activity.

I went into the midi filter preferences in nuendo and made sure everything is allowed through. So at this stage im assuming its the JP thats not sending that slider data out, it thought every knob and slider would send out its own midi data all the time when moved, etc.

Gonna try again tonight, im determined to find out what is going on here! Any other ideas?

thanks,

I just automated the "main volume" (CC07 from memory) in Nuendo and it works fine, the JP's volume changes according to what I draw in but the damn cutoff just wont work, I know its going to be something small and stupid when I find out but its stopping me from working on my songs.
May just sell the damn thing and work completely with vsti's!

are you sure cc#74 is the paramater for the JP's filter?

[edit] never mind, yes it is. Just looked up the manual. IDK if it'll help but the manual states an additional category called SOUND-CTL5, perhaps there's some additional configuration that must be done?
