I have been using Fabfilter's stuff lately and my god its amazing. Not only does it leave the audio clean, but it also provides visual analyzer so you can see which frequencies the sound is taking up. I use Pro-Q.

The guys behind fabfilter are true geniuses, check out this tutorial of them using Pro Q. Very simple to use.

Not sure about anyone else, but for me just putting the pro Q on a track noticeably colours the sound

What version did you use? Im running 1.11 and it works like a charm, I can't hear any differences whatsoever when I A&B it.

Not sure tbh I tried a demo a while back and I was put off getting it. Just tried the latest 1 and it does seem alot better, brilliant infact! I also noticed last time it used to really resonate the sound of certain frequencies with just a tiny boost, I know you can boost and subtract upto 30db but this was only like with 2db, something which I couldn't find in the latest version so yeah totally agree with what you first said :p
