This seems like good advice, thanks.

Try just doing less drugs first. I go out sober/just drink a bit in the winter when the clubs close at 2am. But in the summer when I'm at festivals and partying out doors, the party goes til 8 usually and I am usually taking a few different drugs, along with a bit of booze and smoking weed.

However, I find your logic backwards. Last weekend I went to a party til 8am and only did 1.5 pills and did not do any drinking, and went to work at 3 that evening and felt nearly fine. Drinking is what makes you feel like . I can recover from mdma or mushrooms no problem. My point is, drugs are fun, but being MANGLED is generally excessive and you pay for it for a long time after. So just do one or 2 pills and have a nice small buzz on. If you moderate yourself, you can still have a non-sober night and not hafta pay for it...

I understand what you're saying but perhaps I've not fully explained where I'm currently at with taking stuff. For the last 18 months, I DO take it easy with the amount and don't tend to get mangled. Problem is, after the club, we all go back to someone's house for a few hours, don't get home till 8/9am then when I do go to bed, I can only manage a couple of hours regardless of how tired I feel so it s me up for the next couple of days.

In regards to your comment about clubs shutting at 2am in winter, in the UK, regardless of time of year, I think nearly all clubs will close at 4am or later depending on the event. This brings me to another point. The reason I first started doing stuff was mainly to give me the stamina to go all night rather than be flagging by 1am and then struggling (and not really enjoying myself) for the next two hours before giving up by 3am.

Does anyone manage to stay out late clubbing without any "help" and not have it feel like a tough endurance test where towards the end, all you want is your bed? Anyone manage this who has gone from taking stuff to going straight? Or is this a sacrifice I have to accept that realistically, my club nights out will be shorter and less "epic!"

Thanks everyone else for your thoughts and comments so far. This is a subject which has interested me as there must be 1000's of us who have gone out, taking drugs regularly, got older, laid off the drugs, and subsequently laid off the clubbing.

Anyone else successfully made the switch back to going out without taking anything?

I almost never take drugs during a night out (I only tend to do light stuff, and usually during the after-party phase) and I definitely suffer with the stamina thing, especially if it's a 6am finish. It's the main reason I've considered taking drugs during a night out. I try and combat the "endurance test" feeling by varying it up - chat to mates, chat to randoms, go in the second room for a while. A good second room usually has slower/more chilled music than the main room, so you can sit and nod your head and chat for a bit without feeling you have to dance, which is a good way of getting some energy back.

Trouble is, your problem with ruining your Sunday isn't just the drugs. You'll still go to someone's house, still be up until 9am, still struggle to sleep properly and still be knackered as the next day.

would you believe that I go clubbing without doing anything? I basically don't need to do all those things just to have fun... guess I really have a strong sense of control... lol

Yeah, I never do drugs but have been clubbing (not really on the regular, it's more a once-a-month thing) for years.

I think the secret is going to better parties... you know, where you don't need to be high to enjoy yourself ;)

That or, goto parties that are great sober, and take drugs that make you enjoy good events more, not the ones that make any event the best experience ever regardless of how it is.

i was sober for half a year and had no problems clubbing very late, so of course it's possible

Nah, going back to someone's house and staying up is linked with taking drugs. When we leave the club, we're all wide awake, chatting away and going to bed is the last thing on our minds so we all go back somewhere together for an afterparty.

If I hadn't taken anything, then I'd be ready to call it a night when I've left the club and be tired enough that I'd fall asleep the second my head hit the pillow. Instead, the routine ends up being to leave the club at 5ish, go back to a mates house for a few hours, then go to bed. Spend an hour trying to drift off (even though I've come down a while ago), finally fall asleep, wake up 2-3 hours later still tired but awake, knowing I won't be able to sleep again for the rest of the day.

The problem I find with taking stuff is it can become an "all or nothing" situation. I've tried before to just take a couple of bombs then going home straight after the club but it never works out that way. And god help me when trying to reason with myself whilst under the influence...

This is why I'm in the position of either learning to take nothing at all or only going clubbing a few times a year...

About going to good parties, therefore not needing anything...

Do any of us deliberately choose to go somewhere average/ relying on pills to make it a good night?

We always choose events that we think will be really good. Whether they turn out to be as good as we hoped is another matter. ;)

Eh. Never done drugs to party. (well, except some alcohol) 7 years and still going strong. Though we'll see when 30 hits soon enough.

If the music is good enough, I have a good time. Is drugs really that necessary?

sg_57
The short answer is: YES

It if - of course - totally possible, but what seemed so great and mind-blowing during those chemically-enhanced states may not feel so great with a straight head, whether we are talking about the music, the venue or one's friends.

YMMV
