Hey all,

I recently came across a producer/singer called NNXT, who comes up with some really really catchy vocals lines. I thought I'd have a go at remixing one of her tracks for fun, attempting something REALLY commercial/pop/radio friendly in the dance music style that seems to be mainstream at the moment.

Drums and sub-bass are Reason, one of the bass patches is Omnisphere, the rest is Sylenth.

Here it is:

P.S. The vocals came as one file, multitracked together with reverb already applied, so I was limited with how I could manipulate them, although I did use 3 instances of them in the track, and messed around with them.

Mike you know I tend to like your stuff and note it for the superb quality.

This is fairly pristine mix wise but for one thing the vocals are just monotonous, staying pretty much the same throughout.

Drums are nice, but could be more original and tight.

Missing that big clear simple yet satisfying synth riff, found in just about all current commerical stuff of this nature.

Hope this crit is ok mate, I don't want to say everything is great as in the end thats not a valuable meaningful service I'd be providing!

Thing is pop is so cut throat, you have to get it spot on.

Hey mate,

No problem, thanks for your thoughts! Yes, the vocals are a bit of a problem. The biggest problem is that they come heavily treated already, in terms of reverb and multitracking. The entire vocal stem melts into one 'blob' because the reverb is thick, this makes it hard to cut it up into smaller segments naturally. To be honest, I just plonked the vocal stem down as one object, and built the track around it, so the vocal arrangement in this is exactly the same as the original.

Apart from the bassline, the drums, FX, and the vocals, there are only 2 other elements - an 8-bit sounding ARP, and 2 synths playing the same 7th note riff based on the bassline. I guess I could have been more adventurous with that! The entire thing was done in one sitting, yesterday afternoon - it was good to start and finish something in one go.

I don't think I will change anything, but I appreciate your comments, and take them on board. If I was going to spend some more time on it, I'd definitely take them into consideration! Perhaps if I could get her to give me the dry vocal stems I could look at the track more seriously, it was definitely fun to work with :)

Mike :)
