Ooh, look at you with your open-ended questions.
Photography for the sake of photographing shouldn't require computer manipulation. Of course, commercial design is entirely different, because you are making a product, but if you are taking pictures and are not able to get the light right because of elements such as overexposure, then you should probably go take the picture again. Please visit Myspace for a refresher on the perils of listless photo manipulation. |

But is it actually common for someone who takes photos simply take photos for the sake of taking photos?
I mean maybe a satellite or a NASA robot.
Otherwise there are often other goals in mind, sometimes many goals, either contradictory or complementary.
In the end it is all image-making, and the simple fact is that any camera lens is a form of 'manipulation', and any human hand and its operator are a kind of literal computer manipulation.
So I think the whole notion of 'pure image' or 'raw image' is bunk. Perhaps mere technological fetishism. |

| Yes, I would say the vast majority of photos taken are for the sake of taking photos, and not for commercial design. |

I like this picture, even if I have to make a strenuous effort to read the caption.
I like the ones in the original post as well (except for the one in the bathtub, I don't get it :(). Good job, Stren! |

Ummmm.... yes. That's exactly why people take photos, to document their experience in a particular visual form.
I've got no issues with touching up photos or even the extreme HDR ones (I actually love those), but I have massive respect for stunning photography with absolutely no touch ups. Just pure, photographic skill. |

I really like the first pic, but I would have framed it way differently.

I love the small plant growing out of the wood :) But I dunno, that's me. I take pics of birds :p
I also really like the lake shot, that's awesome.
Edit: Now that I think of it, the broken roof is nearly perfectly above the growing plant and the drying clothes, and that's just right. Meh, I suck. |
