Hi, I just installed Fl Studio 10 on my pc. What are the industry standard plug-ins and synths (both free and for purchase) that I should have? I mostly produce trance. Thanks for any info!

Get them all...
Pagan-za
Albino 3 is my current favourite. Well worth the money.

Vanguard will always be popular with me too. Simple yet awesome.

You dont really need them all.
1 good subtractive synth
1 good FM synth
and learnt to use them.

I recommend Rapture and Omnisphere and zeta+ (if u using PC)

For effects, artsacoustics reverb is really nice.
Fabfilters Timeless delay and the Rob Papen Delay are both top notch.

I personally stick only with Nexus 2 & Sytrus.
Sytrus comes standard with FL Studio and usually the sounds are pretty recognizable & almost cheap sounding...but if you know how to program it, you can make some amazing sounds with it. :) Nexus has a lot of variety and a ton of expansions...there's a lot of professional sounding presets in the expansions (I try to stay away from the standard presets) and they're expensive, but well worth it.

I recently got Massive and I love it. :) Synth1 is kickass on the free side of things.

Hi!

Sylenth1 - one of the best(great sound emulation)
Massive - +++
Albino3 is great for search of interesting sounds, very interesting and original synth.
z3ta+ (for me it's similar to sylenth1 by sound quality)

In FL studio you can find:
Sytrus (it has FL flavour in it although)
Harmless, harmor (similar synths, big sister and brother of sytrus)
Also there are other low, midium quality synths, but if you will FX them - they will be OK.

My points :)

I'd stay away from vangard honestly its not really a good synth by any measure. It sounds like plastic, and uses wayyyyyy too much CPU.

For a beginner I just don't recommend it.

But I should still say that it DOES definitely have its uses and thats for layering. It does definitely impart its own unique sonic characteristics and is great for layering, but for the most part its still a synth that uses more CPU than any other synth I have. I mean it uses more CPU than z3ta and sounds nowhere near as good.

On the other hand though it is extremely simple to learn. So I guess for newbies thats a good thing. The first synth you should get/learn how to program I'd have to say is v-station. Very simple sound, quality filters, low CPU use, can do a lot of different sounds as well as fm.

Step 1. Read this.
Step 2. Learn music theory (about scales, chords, harmonies and whatnot)
Step 3. Make a song with FL native plugins only.
Step 4. Buy Electraxx (optinal) and Harmor (also optional).
Step 5. Learn to use those synths (if you bought them).
Step 6. DONE!
