I think I'll use this opportunity to catch up a bit with the 90s. At this point im just downloading one's from an artist I find interesting, but are there any 'must listen' ones?

FSOL's first one from 1993. First non-dancey and seriously "different" essential mix.

Since we all have our unique tastes and every single person will probably download and listen to different mix, I'd be cool and very informative if you post which mix(es) you listened to with a little tracklist/description/comment/whatever...

Yeah, the Phoenix Festival one. Has a great John Digweed set in there as well, and also quite a decent hit-fest from Pete Tong.

Not sure about the live vocalist on the Blue Amazon set, but it's great to hear the crowd going ing nuts to the tunes.

Fantastic set from Diggers, very enjoyable one from Tong (though the mixing was very sketchy), Shiva was thankfully short, but what the was with the vocalist on BA? Terrible. Thankfully the songs were amazing and the crowd was having fun.

Anyways, the TL I have (though could very well be wrong, I don't vouch for it since I just edited up one I found online) is :

Pete Tong

Todd Terry - Jumpin [Manifesto]
Tori Amos - Professional Widow (Armand Van Helden Remix) [East West]
CJ Bolland - Sugar Is Sweeter (Armand Van Helden Remix) [Internal]
Trancesetters - The Search (Pukka Remixes) [Pukka]
Wildchild - Jump To My Beat [Hi-Life]
Wastepaper - Origami [Paper Recordings]
Victor Imbres Featuring Dihann More - Fire [Greenlight]
Propellerheads - Take California [Wall Of Sound]
Monkey Mafia - Work Mi Body [Heavenly]
Jeremy Healy & Amos - Stamp [Positiva]
Mory Kante - Yeke Yeke
Reverand Mike Crawley - Pow [Distinctive]
Sub Cuts - Wow [XL]
Stormy Weather - Untitled
Sound Enforcer 2nd Series - Icon EP [Blunted Vinyl]
CJ Bolland - The Prophet [Internal]
Marmion - The Spark, The Flame & The Fire [Hooj Choons]
Underworld - Born Slippy [Junior Boys Own]

Shiva (Live PA)

Shiva - Let There Be Love
Shiva - Freedom

John Digweed

Chakra - I Am [Jackpot]
Palefield Mountain - On My Way [Stress]
Robbers Of Antiquity - Dream
Squelch - Crash
Slacker - Flying [Loaded]
The Light - Pan Fried [AAA]
Rabbit In The Moon - East [Rising High]
Goldie - Inner City Life
BT - Blue Skies
Elektra - I'm Alive [Perfecto]

Blue Amazon (Live PA)

Blue Amazon - Star Of David [Jackpot]
Blue Amazon - No Other Love [Jackpot]
Blue Amazon - Then The Rain Falls [Jackpot]

You all have to listen to Carl Cox and Sven Vath from the Love Parade 1999. About 5 mins in you have Coxy talking over the top in a very bad german accent. Its ing hilarious. Plus theres some seriously good techno.

Leftfield from 1994. Those two are producers and yet they put to shame just about every professional DJ who has played on that show. An incredibly eclectic set seamlessly blending in everything from post-punk and ambient to hip-hop and dub, building up into some heavy duty acid house and banging techno and then bringing it back down again. Great mixing too - deliberately playing records at the wrong RPM, mixing out of a record then bringing it back in later over another track, cutting back and forth on the beat... One of my favourite mixes to play before a night out.

And yeah, the FSOL one from 1993 goes without saying.

Agreed with all of this. The Leftfield EM especially is the perfect DJ set in my book, chock full of creativity, variation, great taste and impeccably structured mixing.

I'm gonna throw in my recommendation for CJ Bolland in '94 as well. His mixing is, erm, troubled, but the relentless energy of the tunes he plays just makes up for it in every way possible. An absolute joy for anyone who loves mid 90s dancefloor techno.

I personally struggle to enjoy this one. I've heard CJ Bolland live playing a retro techno set and I do massively enjoy this style of music. However, it really does come to life on a big soundsystem. Played at home, especially with the degraded sound quality of a radio set taped to cassette and then ripped at a low bit-rate, it just can't compare.

True, it's not a listener friendly EM, not so much because of the sound quality, but more due to the tracks being the extremely tool techno-oriented type, without much variation to speak of. However, there's just something about how rough and visceral the mix comes across, a kind of nerve and edge that captures everything I miss about a dancefloor today that makes me so fond of it, despite its flaws.

I seem to have the same sentiment towards the techno disc of World Service, now that I think about it.
