[REVIEW] Tiger and Woods, Slow Hands, and Pillowtalk at Indie Screen, Brooklyn NY

Just a few days ago, I heard that Tiger and Woods, one of my favorite production duos, were doing their first stateside tour, and they would be coming to NY... being a huge fan ("Gin Nation" and "Dr Burner" were 2 of my favorite songs last year), I had to go.
This was one of those things where the party information was announced the day of the event - in this case it was at Indie Screen in Williamsburg. It's nice I didn't have to drive into Manhattan to get there... so I went to the place and got there in time to see Slow Hands.
Slow Hands was very good, I never heard of him before but the music was great! Lots of nu-disco with a very 80's synthpop feel, with a few electro (oldskool 80's electro) cuts. When I got there, there was hardly anybody on the dance floor, but after about 45 minutes or so, the place really filled up and it got quite crowded (it didn't help that the place was very narrow).
After Slow Hands came Pillowtalk, whom I haven't heard of prior to the evening. They played that style of house that gets mocked on these boards a bit nowadays as being "too cool for school" (the "Marcy Hotel" LA rooftop party style - Seth Troxler/Droog/Culprit/Crosstown Rebels/etc stuff)... I don't mind that kinda stuff, but Pillowtalk was also doing a live PA - and the live PA didn't really work for me. The group's singer did a great job, it's just that I wasn't a fan of a lot of their songs. Their final song especially was odd - a 90's R&B/soul number.
I came to see Tiger and Woods, and they did NOT disappoint! I got right to the front to see them, the DJ booth was sitting on the floor, with no distance between the DJs and the dancefloor, which was awesome. I was expecting T&W to just play album cuts, but they brought the Novations and Macbooks running Ableton... they re-edited many of their tracks right on the fly, looping vocals, adding new grooves, adding filters, playing with the drumtracks... their original songs are already warped and funky disco-cutups, so the live re-edits threw me totally off guard (as someone who religiously listens to their "Through the Green" album)... they mostly played their tracks and remixes ("Kissmetellme", "Eagle", "Gin Nation", "Dr. Burner", "Love in Cambodiga", "Curb Your Heart") but ended with Tensnake's "Need Your Lovin". Sadly, they were only on for about an hour and a half...
After the set I got to shake Larry and David's hand, they were pretty personable and were dancing along to the songs, getting very into it. Unfortunately I didn't bring my camera, but the girl dancing next to me took a picture with their infamous tiger figurine.
The venue was pretty nice inside, wood floors and fresh coat of paint... much more of a lounge-esque atmosphere than a sleazy club. The bar service was so slow (it took about 20 minutes to get a drink), and drinks were ridiculous ($12 for a Brooklyn Lager!!!), the crowd was mostly college-age kids, some hipster-types, nothing too out-there, not really a "B&T" esque crowd. The cover was pretty pricey, being $25, but the awesome T&W performance made it so worth it for me. |

dang - good to hear you got to hear T&W play. my first time listening to them was on their RA set and i loved it. |

i just know pillow talk from their 'love makes parks' cut on the one visionquest ep (and i totallly love that track)
12 dollars for a brooklyn lager is a crime tho. hope you were imbibing before the party (if that's your style)
did it seem like a good percentage of the crowd knew the score? or was it just a venue in brooklyn that draws. i don't follow pitchfork anymore, but i can imagine t&w would have some crossover appeal there. |

Nope, no drinking since I was driving in from central Long Island... my friend had a giant bottle of Framboise on the car ride over, which he spent $12 at Trader Joe's on :P
Some people seemed to be singing along with Pillowtalk, not surprised that they have an EP on Visionquest, since they fit along very well with that style. I think they probably would have been better served as an opener, as their music is much more on the deep tinge... instead of right after Slow Hands set.
I was right up in the front with T&W, and noticed a lot of people up with me singing along to "Gin Nation", a few people I talked to up there said how much they loved them. Does Pitchfork talk about T&W, I don't read that site...? I know they had an RA podcast back in February which probably gave them draw. Not sure what percentage of the crowd "knew the score" so to speak, but it looked like much more than I was expecting! |
