Yeah, I think I was slightly traumatized. It's also largely unfinished, though. I've never read the Manga (or any Manga, I suppose), but it's been going on for years and years - the show is only a tiny portion of the whole story.

Another one which shook me pretty badly was "Elfen Lied". 99% of the people I've met didn't get what the animé was really about.

You cant say the movie is childish though. :p I mean, it was originally planed as a live action movie, but for some reason it ended up being animated. Thats how it is in Japan sometimes... Its not like anime demands a certain style of plot or characters or anything, its just another medium over there the same as live action film or television.
Also just because something is overly violent doesn't mean its not childish. I found Berserk to be pretty childish just because of the gratuitous amounts of violence.
