Where do Dubs come from?

This may sound retarded, but I'm just curious as to where dub versions of a track come from. Are they always officially released or are they works of someone using software to remove vocals or what? Like for example, more recently the dub versions of AVB's remix of Time is the Healer and the dub version of Thillseekers Dreaming of You appeared. Were these taken from a vinyl? If yes I have never seen them available but I really haven't looked that hard. If no, do dub versions of tracks such as these ever make it to vinyl? Thanks for any information!
Endre

they just remove the vocals and fix some stuff, then its done.

Dubs are almost always official releases...unless you have a song in it's original multi-track format it's difficult to edit out something like vocals without having it either

A) not work

or

B) sound like crap

Seriously though, not all Producers make dubs, and some do it better than others, and more ofton than not, the Dub is released on the Promo versions only. Record company's make more money off a track with vocals.
