Nice to see a new mix by you again Rob :)
What I've heard so far this sounds great. Haven't had time to go through the whole thing yet though. |

And for the record, this is the most proud I've been of a mix since "Gonzo."
Those of you who know/remember me will likely have some idea what that means. |
In that case I'm definitely in. :) |

Took a listen to this and highly enjoyed it. The set flew by, which is always nice. I really was a fan of the way it opened, with that fat assed bassline that made me think of Seinfeld for some reason :p
I'm not really a house guy by trade, so I can't really leave any meaningful feedback other than I thought everything sounded great. Mixing and flow were solid, tunes were sexy and groovy. Some of them kinda reminded me of the genre challenge mix I did with the funky american house (click Set Archive -> Da Bears). Nice work, Rob. |
Cheers buddy! I always appreciate that you take the time to listen, particularly because you're not a house guy. I know all too often a lot of folks (particularly here) will look at my tracklists and think they're either too "trend house" or "not trend house enough", so I sit in this kind of weird limbo where it's hard to please either crowd.
I'm glad there's still a niche market that can enjoy it. Very, very satisfying, so thanks for that (that's what she said).

Thanks man - hope the end proves as enjoyable as the beginning. To me it's still a little weird to look at the beginning of the tracklist versus the end - but it's all house music, just somewhat different vibes.

Heh, there's a short list of sets that I really, really look back on fondly, with "Gonzo" likely being my proudest effort.
I'm a firm believer that one only gets better at any pursuit through volume of work - whether it's doing copious amounts of math problems, writing, or any artistic endeavor, including DJ'ing. As such, when someone can continue to put out work, while they may not always be gold, there should always be a glimpse of progress, even in the failures.
What largely made me happy about this is that those "little glimpses of progress" from years worth of sets of varying personalities seemed to come together well here.
I'm not "guy with a messenger bag out every single night trying to play gigs" anymore - not that there's anything wrong with that - it's just not me. This is how I participate in electronic music these days, and I'm happy with the fact that I can still be damn proud that this is what makes me happy.
tl;dr: Thanks to the handful of you who still indulge me. You really don't know how much I appreciate it. |

I couldn't agree more. I have a very similar approach to music these days, I don't play out anywhere near as much as I did 5 years ago and just frankly can't be bothered, at the moment I'm a lot more focused on producing my own music more so than actual djing.
I wouldn't bother trying to sign anything as I know in the scheme of things my music stinks, but I'm gonna stick with it as I love the making process and there's definite progress with my work which is what pleases me. Hopefully one day have enough pride with a piece to want to try getting it signed and out there properly.
I'll still have to take the time to give this a good hearing as I played it last night but have had a very busy week and was extremely tired and fell asleep not long into it. (it wasn't the music!:p ) |

This looks great Rob. I had no idea 'Foxy' was already out, been waiting for that one to get released for years!

Really eager to hear what you fellows think of this. Like I've repeated ad nauseam, I'm quite pleased not only with this set, but the general throwback nature of house music lately.
A lot of people hate it, and I get the backlash - but this is for sure a moment in house music I've been waiting a long time for, and I hope it comes through in a worthwhile set.

Welcome back to the fray, Rob! I'm of that opinion too, better to play from the heart, than try to tailor your mix to appease a few tastemakers.
This mix really brightened up an otherwise drab Monday. The intro song by Lovebirds is fantastic, reminds me of "Little Fluffy Clouds" by the Orb. The rest of the mix is great too, there were a few absolute scorchers on the mix, and most of the tracks had a "warm" flavor to them.
One thing I really liked about the mix was your mixing, it was very "cut up" style, in contrast to the usual long blends. I liked how the tracks never felt like they were dragging, felt like you crossed a ton of territory in 60 minutes. From the nu-disco beginnings, to the deep techy house of the middle, to the retro-house throwbacks towards the end (Something About You). There were a few songs on here that I absolutely loved that I'll have to now pick up on BP or Amazon.
"Neptune" was an interesting choice as the closer, as it was a bit of a stylistic shift from the rest of the mix, made me wonder what would have happened if you continued the mix in a more proggier direction... |

I really like this mix. Perfect blend of different house and disco tracks which makes me want to hear this out on a dancefloor somewhere. Share Your Love is amazing, such a warm track :)
You don't disappoint Rob, great work! |

| its an awesome mix, the disco at the begining is really grooving! You lose me with some of the techier tunes about half way through, but the end is good again, so i forgive you ;) |

| Ace mix Rob. enjoyed it the whole way through but things really kicked into gear for me around 17 mins in and didn't let up, although I did like the way you handled the first few tunes, didn't plod or lose momentum which I feel with a lot of long blending style house mixes these days. I agree the lovebirds tune is really nice for starting with. I loved where you took the mix, had my house shakin'. The last track caught me by surprise too and was another fave as I'm a sucker for good progressive house but gotta say kinda disappointed the mix didn't go for longer as was really diggin the direction. Anyway great job! |

I know I've said that. I just don't remember exactly where.
Lovebirds was just one of those things that came around about the time I was getting sick of house for a few years. A lot of his stuff didn't really resonate with me.
The Honey Badger EP is clearly awesome though.

Yeah, I basically have attention deficit disorder at this point and bore easily. Errgo, the so-called "cut up" mixing style. I think it wound up playing better in this mix than the last one, because it was definitely noted there in a negative light.
I was also pretty self-conscious about the track list. I always think I suffer from middling track selection, straddling too many different styles, never "just the right" amount of anything to please folks.
And the choice to end it at "Neptune" was made in the hopes of that kind of response. I'm considering continuing this with a bit of a prog/techno second half and offering both the hours as single files or a continuous mix.
We'll see though, it could be a while.
Thanks as always, for both the listens and the thoughtful comments. :) |
