Nope, never was. You're witnessing a scene that even at the time had been commercialized beyond what current day trance could ever hope to be. I suppose the non music producers quickly figured out you don't really need an excuse to throw in 'that beat'. Some hormone filled chants and movie quotes do the job just fine.
