We're no longer trance haters. The hate has passed to commercial house.

Rant about the DJ MAG Top 100 by Troy Carter

Just to clarify things in case people don't have enough common sense to figure it out on their own as to what's been going on in the DJ scene over the last 10 years or whatever.

The DJ Mag Top 100 Poll is for the most "popular" DJ's and has always been for the most "popular" DJ's. Just nowadays it's more marketing and mass appeal that will get you a top spot than who is the "best".

But ask yourselves really? What the does that even mean that "so and so" is not the "best"? There will be a million answers when it comes to that, on what skills should be required for a DJ to be considered the top. Everybody is the "best" DJ, I am, you are, who are we to judge? The whole process of selecting the "top" DJ whatever the hell that even means, has been given to the hands of the public to decide on who they think is the "best". And now that house music is actually cool because artists like Tiesto, David Guetta, Bob Sinclar, & Swedish House Mafia have made all these commercial hits guess what people? Obviously the Top 100 is going to be more like the "Pop" 100. Things change overtime and the Top 100 is merely a marketing tool. Last year I ran a small campaign in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll and collected enough votes to hit position #289 or something like that. Does that mean that out of all the DJ's in the world I'm one of the 300 "best" DJS? Absolutely not! As much as I'm confident in my skills and know I am a highly talented DJ at the same time I realize that once anything becomes more than a hobby or pass time its a small-medium or large business. Any successful business needs some kind of marketing. Marketing to the people that don't have any sense as to what to like or follow, so they just go with whatever is in the Top 10 of whatever list they're following. It could be what movie they should go see, what brands they should wear, what restaurants they should eat at, what music to listen to or of course what DJ's they should be listening to. There is countless books on this subject and house music in this day and age is subject to it as well.

What the hell exactly is a "good" DJ nowadays I ask again? When I started DJing 16 years ago, a good DJ had hard to find records, was beatmatching on 2 or 3 turntables and was just dressed in a hoodie with some baggy jeans. In present time, as long as you're sticking out like a sore thumb hit with a spiked ing bat, with some kind of outrageous outfit and have some kind of pyrotechnics or fancy lighting its OK and almost normal if you dont know what beatmatching is or if you have the same music as the million other guys out there. Before people complain about the Top 100 and how its needs to be fix, why dont you trying fixing the thats going on in your own community because its happening everwhere...

All you promoters out there in any city that claim to have the "best" Friday or Saturday night, or the "best" DJ in the city or the "best" music or the "best" crowd are you kidding me? And you all know it, all of you, promoters, owners, DJs, bartenders & barmaids, doorman, etc.. You know your club sucks, but you don't market it that way why? Because it's a business just like anything else.. And ya IMO (As always everything I rant about is MY OPINION , I'm not CNN) there's lots of guys & girls playing in clubs out there even in my hometown that I really don't think should be "up there" or are necessary "good" DJs, but you see them in small top 10's, getting interviewed with dumb girls saying how great they are and bla bla bla... Why are they there? Because it's a business and whatever or whoever is gonna bring the most $$$ to the bar tills or admission outlets at the end of the day is gonna be in the "top 10" pointe finale. It's such a simple concept to grasp but yet still every year the same thing happens, people complaining about who gets more lime light than them. They contributed more, they're worth more, they marketed themselves better, that's all.

So keeping all that in mind when you look at the Top 10 again from the DJ MAG Top 100 this year now does it make a bit more sense to you? David Guetta #1? No one even had to tell me that for me to know that's probably what's going to happen. The guy has been on so many mainstream hits this year with all the pop artists it would almost not make sense if he didn't get the #1 spot or at least one of the top 3. Not that I agree with his musical direction or anything but he definitely is the #1 "Top 100" DJ of this year by far. If anything wouldn't people complain about Deadmau5? He's not even a DJ! How did someone who doesn't DJ make it to #4? Or what about Swedish House Mafia? There's 3 of them! Isn't it Top 100 DJ Poll not Top 100 DJ Group Poll? Regardless that Top 10 list all makes sense wether or not other DJ's think the DJ's are good or like their music. All those who made it into the Top 10 work their asses off and deserve their recognition. After all at the end of the day don't we want recognition for our efforts?

If you are a DJ striving to be the best and whining about this , please punch yourself in the face right now. Because if you strive and know the rules and politics of the game you too one day could be a top 100 DJ; and all I know that is if in my case after all my years of struggling, if I finally made my way up the ladder, opened up doors for others in my genre, was able to ask for more money per gig than the average person makes in a year and got recognized by a magazine as one of the elite in my field, then read some comments from some stupid punk djs who are probably playing my music that they didn't even pay for and didnt struggle half as much as I did, saying I don't deserve my recognition you can be damn sure I'd want to punch them in the face.

So go ahead, punch yourselves in the face.

The End

P.S Vote Troy Carter LMAO

Any thread is good these days. It's bad enough there's nothing to read on MTLTA anymore. It's all about half naked women, event listings and producers' tracks now :p

Totally agree. It's a no brainer that Guetta is #1. No need to rant.

Even at the local DJ level, very easy to lose yourself in those politics.

You start playing for music, and suddenly it's all about labels, booking DJs in another city to get booked in their clubs, pushing friends only, dissing vs club, producing anything as long as you are on Beatport, having a Resident Advisor chart when you are practically a piece of in the universe, wanting to climb up DJ Mag poll because you have 4 tracks out.

But the rules of life are always the same. After a few years of that bull, you get more and more bitter in this crappy club business until you get back to square one.
