Graphics card for 3D apps and Gaming?
View this Thread in Original format

I need a new video card.. and I don't know exactly which one to get.

I would need it for rendering some crazy 3D images in Lightwave, but would also like to use it for gaming.

Now, price is a big issue, and I only want to spend about $200 CND. (the card doesnt need to be retail, Im happy with OEM too).

Right now I'm looking at the 'ATI Radeon 8500 128MB DDR OEM' for $159 CND, and it looks like a good deal to me.

anyone have opinions about these cards, or any other cards?

THankS! :D

i think you probably need a gf. i heard 4 is good

Geforce 4 is good and the ATI all in WONDER~!

Chrono, I just got the Radeon 9000 Pro as opposed to the Geforce 4 460 MX (or whatever its called lol)... its a really nice card... Neverwinter Nights and America's Army look amazing on it.
k.k.d.
or wait for the Radeon 9700, pay 500 CND for it and be happy ;)

But seriously, bestvalue on market MUST be the Radeon 9000 pro...

As for NVidia.. Brkkk on them... ;)

I just got a ATI Radeon 8500LE 128MB Retail (Built by ATI) a few weeks ago for $200.....it works great in 3D games (especially UT2K3).

This is the Retail LE version meaning it comes clocked @ 250mhz core and 250 mhz memory (DDR).....the OEM version (Powered by ATI) have been known to come clocked @ 230mhz/230mhz.

I'd pick up the retail version instead (don't pay more than $200 CND) because it can be overclocked to 275/275 with stock cooling, thus, giving it the same performance as a regular 8500 radeon.

And what about the 9000 Pro?...well these cards are cheaper, but they perform slower than the 8500 cards.

btw, if you want to up the performance a bit, you can check out the Geforce 4 Ti4200 for about $300 CDN.

This card performs better than the Radeon 8500 and has much better driver support.

You should also make sure you have a relatively fast CPU. If you have a system running under 1000Mhz, the speed of the newer video card will be held back dramatically because the CPU will not be able to feed information to the video card at a fast enough rate....the end result will be lower frame rates.

well I wouldnt get the 9000 pro cause it's slower than the 8500 and I can afford the difference..

the Ti4200 is too much $$.

Radeon 9700 is WAyyyy too much $$.

as for the 8500LE, I might as well just get a 8500... I don't see any advantage in getting the LE

and about my system, i've got p4 1700gHz, 1024MB RAM, winXP so I think it's fine ;)

Get the ATI 8500 from canadacomputers.com

Best card for the value. Just look at the different benchmark comparisons.

why not?? I have used one before and it seems very good, especially for the price.

and yes, I would get it from canada computers because they have a store within about 30 mins from my house, and they throw in a 1 year store warrenty.

ATI got real good with drivers over the last 6 months, better than they ever were.. Yes, the new 9700 will not use the unified driver, but who cares? ATI drivers rock now, and for gamers, there is always "Radeonator" hacked set that works miracles...
