" The first statue near ground zero to salute the heroes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will not depict a New York firefighter or policeman — but a lone U.S. Commando on horseback in the Afghan mountains."

Didn't they mainly ride mules? Actually I cant remember any pics of them on mules or horses, just using them to carry .
*edit*
Also, why doesn't he have a huge beard? He looks like John Wayne. Those dudes were rocking some pretty big beards during their work with the Northern Alliance.

The 2nd TF-Dagger team to insert was ODA 595, which was flown across the Hindu Kush mountains by SOAR MH-47s on the 20th of October. The team was inserted in the Dari-a-Souf Valley, south of Mazar-e-Sharif, linking up with the CIA and General Dostum, commander of the largest and most powerful Northern Alliance Faction.
"The 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, formed the core of Joint Special Operations Task Force NORTH, called Task Force (TF) DAGGER, under the command of Col. John Mulholland. In addition to the 5th Special Forces Group personnel, the task force included aviators from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), also stationed at Fort Campbell, and Special Tactics personnel from the Air Force Special Operations Command headquartered at Hurlburt Field, Florida."
Actually, the first monument went up to commemorate flight 93.

i think that this is the pic that you are referring to, i chuckled when i saw it in an advertisement for a video game.
it also made command crack-down and demand all SOF to shave, which did not go over well.

That pic is probably the most famous, but the guys that were up in the north with the alliance had beards, almost all of them, just because it helped them fit in with the locals.

exactly, a large part of an unconventional warfare mission is to "fit in" with the indigenous forces.
