It's a sad day in the EDM world... (pg. 2)

Instead of getting upset about people who enjoy music that we don't even listen to, why don't we just ignore it and keep paying attention to actual good music? There's too much quality to keep getting hung up on this nonsense. Give it a chuckle and move on... |
Do you really not see how this effects you?
I mean, I agree, who cares in a sense... But at the same time, when I go to ruby I don't want to hang out with a bunch of muscle heads and wangsters who thing Will.I.am. is so good at making techno that they now need to go to all the techno/house clubs...
Paris and Bieber joining the rush to make a buck off edm means there will be even more of these dumb kids effecting the scene.
The "scene" doesn't belong to any of us, sure, and change is good in most instances.... But this could really effect EDM for a long time. Everytime EDM jumps to the front of popularity, something bad happens and everyone pays the price, but mostly those of us who actually care about the music. |

I get that. It's an interesting topic and worth talking about, I just think the melodramatic "sad day for EDM" wailing is dumb.
With that said, for as much crap as we give it for being mainstream, dubstep kids still think it's pretty underground, at least if youtube comments are any indication. It will be interesting to see if Bieber doing dubstep would be enough to ruin the genre's credibility in the eyes of its fans. Dubstep has blown up massively but the genre has been clearly been feeding off its "cool" status up to now. Has it reached "trance status" where it can survive if all the cool kids stop listening to it? |
REALLY good point here... Will be interesting to see! |

EDM went wrong when people like Roger Shah started to turn their act into a en joke. This guy stands on stage playing slow jams in the middle of a club and everyone is looking at him like WTF ARE YOU DOING. He has his minion go get every decent looking girl in the crowd and she comes on stage terrified of that slimeball. He even has the nerves to actually grab their hands and try to get close to them, completely aware maybe her boyfriend or husband is right there in the crowd.
Then they started to put the cheesiest vocal trance out to the masses. Above and Beyond are byfar the most guilty of this. I think they have some good productions but the crap they put out on their CDs sounds like a en love album. When I listen to music I want something so I can tap my feet to, feel the beat, not get all horny and want to everything in sight (although that sounds like fun!)
The true turning point in EDM was the summer 09, The Summer of Sellout as I like to call it. Guetta, Deadmau5, Tiesto, etc. all started selling out producing with pop acts because their music is so stale to true EDM fans that they needed to go spread their diarrhea to the untrained ears. You don't even know how many times people dick rode Tiesto's Kaleidoscope not realizing just how ty that album was. |

I see what you mean. I think I might have a different perspective mainly because I don't go to Ruby anymore so the "degradation" of the uber-mainstream EDM crowd doesn't really affect me. Even still, the last few times I've been there it hasn't been all that bad, still way better than your average top 40 night. If it ever gets really bad maybe it would be time to try out some other venues, heh. |

within one year:
armin will be dropping remixes of justin bieber's dubstep efforts...
knowing full well that every time he does, a unicorn somewhere will die.
IT'S ALL OVER FOR TRANCE GUYS |

I remember people getting all upset when they found out that Sonny Moore, that greasy haired emo nerd from the band 'From First To Last' was getting into dubstep.
And look what happened to him. |

Skrillex' street cred will go down the tank if he collaborates with Bieber.... but if he does, his bank account will go through the roof.
it'll happen for sure. |

I think techno purists (and probably house/tech-house heads) are probably fine with this...it's going to have the effect of putting their music back underground, in small clubs, and keep debstep douchery out of their music.
I think they are going to be pretty happy.
It has the unfortunate effect of it's really hard to find good trance now.
I know some people are switching genres just to ensure they are hanging
out in the right scene for them. It's sad, but it's unfortunately what some people
have to do...
me, personally, I can't stand this dub/crap/electro , and I'm actually getting
tired of vocals (I don't mind some now and then, properly placed without too much breakdown). I want my music hard and pumping, and I am tending to like more stuff
that I would want to spin at a house party. |

Justin Bieber is doing dubsept. Hate the genre or not, Justin dabbling in it make the whole EDM scene go to . First Paris, now this? All we need is Kim Kardashien (how ever you spell it) singing trance vocals and we're done.
