Anyone complaining that Loco Dice didn't put the soundsystem to it's use last time he was here, well.. he really did last night, holy hell!
I walked in at 4am after having a few drinks with my friends and the place was already rammed. Crowd was very interesting, a lot of proud tunisians/arabs to support him. One guy brought a Tunisia flag and the bouncers told them to put it away. Much younger crowd then the normal saturday crowd, and the gays were out really early yesterday and seems like they left early too, which is the opposite of what normally happens. 60/40 guy/girl ratio, there were still a lot of cuties to look at though.
Maher had the crowd rocking out pretty hard, everyone was digging the Cassius Remix. Excellent warm up from what I saw, I could tell that Loco Dice was planning to smash it.. when he got in the booth the crowd roared, and he started around 4:30. He started off the night playing massive techno bombs, one after another.. the club was vibrating yet the sound was still so tight. He got the crowd going nuts right from the get go, I was full of energy and surprised at how hard he was going so early.
Then his set got really twisted around 5:15, the energy dropped off a little bit.. just evil dark soundscapes, very metallic sounding.. a girl I was with actually got scared! Hahahaha.. trippy whispering vocals, I couldn't leave the dance floor. From there he started playing some tribal techno, lots of drums with big techno basslines. One thing I noticed, all his drops were 3 measures instead of the standard 2 everyone's used to.. making those drops just devastating. He'd also high pass white noise but only drop the bass on the 3 instead of 1, I ing LOVE that. Syncopation is it? Anyways..
From there he started playing more thumping techno and tech house, my favorite part of the night was around 8am when he just started playing super trippy. Lots of crazy sounds, I'll never forget that one track that was in 5.1 surround, retarded sweep that went all across the 4 speaker towers in a circle, I was in the middle of the dance floor and almost jizzed my pants.. it was insane.
To end the night, he played some quality tech house. End of the set was a pleasure, I didn't want to leave.. he had me locked in, the crowd was eating it up. He pulled out a video camera and filmed the crowd a bit, he looked like he was having a blast. After playing the 'Definition' accapella, or maybe it was the original? Don't remember.. he played this very nice beatless track that was an outro and the night was over.. 10:40am.
His mixing for the most part was on point, he did go off beat 2-3 times and almost trainwrecked a blend, but I was told he was playing time coded vinyl on traktor and was using a mouse on his laptop, pretty tricky. Overall he was pretty smooth, nice EQing.. some nice fx, massive drops, some cool cuts. I was impressed.
The programming of that set was just perfection. When he started playing so hard, I was wondering how the hell he could keep me going all night, but he did.. he really changed the mood and the energy levels very nicely to keep the set interesting. He had me locked in around 7am, his track selection was so strong. Transitioning between these different sounds of techno was also very smooth, I was just vibing it out the whole night. The set just flowed seamlessly throughout.
The thing that impressed me the most was how incredibly clean and crisp the sound was last night.. incredible sound, maybe the best I've ever heard? The basslines were just rolling, but not over the top. He was playing pretty loud and pushed that system to the limit but he never overdid it.
Overall, incredible night last night at the Temple. Easily top 5 night and set I've ever heard. Much MUCH MUCH better then Carl Cox a few months ago as far as techno/tech house sets. He looked like he was having a blast, hope he comes back soon cuz that was a serious beating he gave that dance floor. |

Best Sounding Set I've Ever Heard On The System. What A Great Vibe. This coming from someone that's not a fan of his/his label. Was an awesome night.

Great night for me, without a doubt. I was at Le Velvet before hitting up stereo. Reached stereo dance floor around 5ish. I was awestruck by the breakdowns of many of his tracks, specially between 6-7:30ish. I though some tracks he played felt like acid house. The breakdowns just got the entire crowd breaking it down in unison. He really put those speakers to test. Loved the loudness and thumping bass. I saw the sound guy lower the master levels and Loco Dice put them up right away. Really really good vibe and awesome crowd. A few cuties for sure! Got a chance to hang with a few. :toothless
Left at 8:40! Didn't have a choice I had to leave Montreal by noon, so needed some rest before that. I am glad it was worth making the trip all the way to Montreal. Awesomeness! |

thanks! When it's a night as special as that I like to write it all down.
I'd say 600-700 people? Not the most packed I've ever seen it.. a lot of the gays left super early, when Loco Dice finished up there must have still been 100-150 people left, he could have gone on until 12.. people were cheering for an encore hahaha. Was a great party. |

I'm soo pissed that I didn't go. Well I have finals the upcoming week but... the last time that I've seen him @ Stereo it was the most boring sets that I've ever heard. And now all my friends are raving on how it was :(. AMAZING review Corjay. Glad that everyone had a good time. |
