| quote: | Canada has been dubbed the best country “brand” in the world for the second year in a row by an international business consulting group.
FutureBrand has again put Canada at the top of its 2011 country brand index. It’s meant to gauge what people immediately think of when an country’s name is mentioned, they see a picture of it or they plan a trip there. It’s based on interviews with travellers from around the world.
In a statement issued by the Canadian Tourism Commission, Maxime Bernier, the federal minister of state for small business and tourism, said: “Canada’s continued rating at the top of FutureBrand’s country brand index is a testament to our country’s global appeal.
“We have a wealth of compelling experiences for travellers, and our government is committed to sustaining this momentum by promoting Canada in innovative ways on the international stage.”
The tourism commission said that having this kind of appeal is not only good for attracting visitors to Canada, but it can convince people all over the world that it is a good place to conduct business and invest in.
“While Canada’s tourism brand has grown into a powerful cultural force and a marketing tool to inspire visitation, it also has largely untapped potential as a lever to drive trade and investment in ideas, education and business,” commission CEOMichele McKenzie said in a statement.
“In this period of global economic turbulence, by showing the world that Canada is a dynamic, modern and cosmopolitan society, we’re not just inviting the world to visit us, we’re capitalizing on our positive reputation to open new doors and create new opportunities.” |

Not surprised one bit.
This is especially evident when travelling through Europe. |

It's a nice distinction from the business community.
However, personally, the more Harper is in power, the less I'm proud to say I'm Canadian when abroad. He's a mini-Bush and an embarrassment. His ideologies and stances do not represent most Canadians, and yes, I realize he got elected fairly. His war on drugs, war on terror, reform of the Criminal Justice System that goes 180' against empirically-based research, greatly diminished civil liberties, poor environmental record, and that of human rights (think Omar Khadr) are just a few examples top of my head...
My rant for today :)
