I am sure many of you have partied at the Torino stage during DEMF and have thought how awesome it would be to check out Movement Torino in Italy. When I realized that my trip to Rome was booked during the festival we (Geoff and I) decided it was something we could not pass up. So we took an 8 hour train ride to Turin to check things out.
The party was held in the Olympic Hockey Arena from 2006. We arrived at 9pm (as Underworld started 10) and pretty much walked right in. The set up was really nice. I was a bit disappointed that it wasn’t held in the actual stadium but in the concourse areas around it. However the 3 stages had plenty of dancing space, great lighting, mirrors on the ceiling of one room, and the sound was decent enough. They had a whole restaurant area set up with lots of food options (chicken, pizza, and such) Washrooms were portapotties outside which made for a chilly experience. Drinks were a bit expensive – a redbull and beer set us back 12 euros, water was 3. What was more upsetting was that there was no hard liquor – apparently the Italian police confiscated it hours before the festival started.
The most annoying thing was that we couldn’t find set times posted anywhere and recalling set times in our head was a bit challenging.
Got to check out a bit of Tales of Us, who would fit in perfectly with the whole Toronto ‘Modern Love Affair’ and would love to see them as a booking.
Underworld played a great set. Very different from when I saw them here in Toronto a couple years ago – less of ‘show,’ less sparkle (if you remember his jacket). A lot of tracks I didnt recognize but was happy to hear Born Slippy, 2 months off, Rez/Cowgirl. One track sounded a bit like dubstep –ugh- But the energy was great and they are always a lot of fun.
Visionquest was great. Seth Troxler was amazing – just like when I saw them at DEMF Troxler didn’t play until the very end and picked up the dance floor with a bit more of a commercial sounding side. Damian Lazarus pretty much cleared the room when he came on afterwards.
Caught part of Derrick Mays set, which sounded like the Copacabana on crack.
The overall vibe was pretty good. The crowd was REALLY young but most people were polite, not pushy, and overall positive.
We left pretty early – exhausted from the full day of traveling.
It was a fun night – especially after not partying for a long time. But I would never go out of my way to attend.
(Art Department didn't make it :( )
