hey guys,

was driving to work today and I had a compilation cd playing, Gareth Emery' exposure came on and I was really impressed by the bass sound and how well it sits on top of the kick.

Does anyone know what instrument may have been used?

More importantly, what sine wave would you begin with if trying to make this sound?

I sat for hours trying to make something but they sounded like a bee farting.

I really want to make this sound myself if I can so i can learn along the way. If I keep failing I may have to check out some soundsets, other resources, etc.

heres the link, it comes in around 1 minute.

It's a Chicago stab kinda sound.

You want lots of sawtooths oscillators, Sylenth is good for this but any VA will do.

You want to create a minor chord so in Sylenth set on Saw pitch to +3, one to +7, another down one octave and leave the other where it is. Medium amp decay and a little release, you'll want to detune them all a little too (say 15-20%)

Apply a low pass over the lot and then use Mod Env 1 to modulate filter cutoff, using similar settings to the amp env.

cheers mate, will give it a go tonight, I dont have sylenth but I have massive and zeta, im sure they'll do the trick.
i really like your suggestion in regards to the detuning. Let ya know how I go, thanks again!

mate, thanks so much for the info! I just spent a few hours with Massive and come up with some bass sounds im really really happy with, fit in the mix beautifully. I didnt detune to much, usualy just sent another osc down an octave and tweeked a few Cents here and there, nothing drastic. When i get a chance I will compare my sounds to the bass sound on the Emery track to see how close I am, etc. As mentioned though, im really happy with my own attempt cause they work for my songs and current mix. Now I just gotta find more time to refine and perfect them, not enough hours in a day.

cheers!
