Very true Dave, I just didn't have time to do it all and didn't have a copy of win7 spare so I'm working from out the box condition. It's actually quite crazy - there are already two antivirus programs on this laptop, and then they give you a retail norton DVD with a laptop purchase.

Then there's all the asus installed on here which does nothing more than run background tasks for programs that you'll use once a year (like asus live update) which are all negated by the fact windows update should handle that side of things anyway.

I think I'll use it for 6 months, wait for it to get clogged up and then just wipe and start from scratch.

I will say this, even though win7 is a welcome upgrade and the rightful step foward from XP, it reminds me why I love the simplicity of OSX:

I'm on the 7th windows update (windows has updates for updates) and installing even basic programs need so much damn user interaction to keep clicking next and agreeing to EULAs etc, or customise specific install options so bing search bars and even more useless software is not bundled with your program installation.

Unfortunately these days you usually get the re-installer on your harddrive instead of an original cd and those backups pack that ty software as well. Nothing left but to deinstall it before getting started, and perhaps make another backup at that time.

Asus surely is the best bet with laptops still. The ultrabooks that are now slowly starting to show up will be a revelation though :) - because Intel enforces strict hardware policies for using the ultrabook brand which is theirs. Surely it will fill up the entire high-end laptop catagory within the coming year.

You know, you're right - in my case it came with W7 home premium installed and your option to re-install is only by creating a disk upon first boot up with all that junk included, so if I'm going to do a fresh install, I'd go w7 ultimate from a fresh disk or download.

UPDATE:

It did windows update twice more, that brings the count up to 7 required updates procedures.

I also cannot uninstall one of the included antivir programs so going to have to with the registry and remove the components myself. Quite annoying.

That's why I'll never buy another laptop from those blue-shirted idiots, unless it's such a killer deal that I can buy an OEM W7 license on top of the computer and still come out ahead.

The pre-installed stuff is terrible. With Dell you can call them up (or at least you used to be able to) and get them to post you an OEM disk and you only pay for postage. Tried that with Asus? Give them a call.

I needed a laptop that day for mu business and anything I ordered would have taken 48 hours to get to me before a days worth of program installation. 3 days without a working computer = loss greater than 3 x laptops.

Upgrade from w7 premium to ultimate = less than $100.

There are also ways to get it for free from microsoft as well if you know how to be creative ;)

Well yea, you ask them for a disk and they send you one for $10 once you provide your current key. You've been able to do that forever.

True, but there's no need to get the disk - just get a download from the net, and get a valid key from MS: they email you one within 24 hours :D

How much did that (just the hardware) set you back out of interest?
