Could somebody explain what the hell this 'Progressive' prefix is all about..

Well, this is in regards to Progressive House & Trance. I'm quite lost at what Progressive actually means when it's used as a prefix for these 2 genres, because it sounds annoyingly pretentious when you come across your typical 'Progressive' 2010/2011 Trance mix and almost every track has the same cliched bassline and other elements as the other song (I don't have to explain much about the dilemma with modern Trance anyway, you guys know exactly what I'm talking about). Isn't Progressive "anything" really (or should I say ideally) supposed to present the new so called subgenre as something a little more evolved and ahead of its time than just a 10 minute repetition of the same boring percussion?

Progressive just means trancy house or housey trance these days.

If it's a house track but has supersaws and anthems they'll probably call it 'progressive' (see avicii)

If it's a trance track but is sorta subdued and repetitive they'll probably also call it 'progressive'

Don't put too much meaning in a name.
Subtle
Progressive should be about new ideas and such, unfortunately its mostly the opposite these days..

Inb4 System J.

To spare him the work, the term 'progressive' was originally coined for a mix of House & Trance in the early 90s, which had very fresh and new ideas at the time and didn't really follow any specific formulas, hence the term 'progressive'. In the late 90s the term 'progressive' was started to being connected with a specific formula (long, shifting, atmospheric tracks etc. what Trance people normally think of when they hear 'progressive')
By the time of the dark Prog of the early 00s the term 'progressive' was all formula.

I think nowaday 'progressive' is often being associated with this stupid House-Trance stadium anthem sound which all the cheese DJs play. But whatever, it's sort of a stupid term anyway.

prog never fails to confuse.

I agree with trancy-house = prog.house. tends have little/none of the typical house vocals but still has that smooth groove. It will typically have dominate hihats and other conspicuous elements with the major beat in contrast with trance which seems to focus less on drum accents and more on the synth. vanilla house will alot of the times have a bass guitar element reapeating with the measure and, finally, trance get its tempo from a kickdrum made of diamond-bladed supersaws!

i dont punctuate... i just say and

Prog House
Layo and Bushwaka - let the good times roll (josh gabriel mix)

Prog trance
Midtone - pearl (original)
