How much gain is usally used or is best when cutting or boosting instruments/tracks ? i know i should boost wide and cut thin. |

just tweek until it sounds good, dont even worry about what the graph looks like or how many db you are boosting or cutting, a good engineer once said to me "if it sounds good, it probably does. if it sounds bad, it probably does!" Trust your ears, they'll let you know.

i think people boost and cut way too much. In particular, This whole high passing is really taken too far. It is really rare to hear a mix that doesn't sound like everything has been sucked out. Stop using 48 dB/ octave rolloff on everything. People also cut out the mids way too much. For example , snares. Snares live in the 250 hz region. Don't highpass them at 500 Hz. Getting rid of those supposed mud areas 250 and multiples of that frequency because you've been told or read it is not going to make things better. |

You always put a pinch of salt.
You always cut by -6 dB. Always from 250 hz - 500 hz.
That is the answer to life. |
