FOR MAIN SYNTH PARTS, WHAT TURNS YOU ON JUST NOW?
Ok I'm one of those that says it's not your equipment, it's wut you do with it, but you know what, it is my equipment as far as synth leads and prominent chordal sounds are concerned.
I use presents and tweak them and make my own from scratch.
THE CENTRAL ISSUE I HAVE IS I AM NOT GETTING LEADS AND MAIN HOOKY SYNTH PARTS THAT HAVE AN INTERESTING ENOUGH TONE. Maybe it's my ears, but my synths aren't inspiring anything much.
I do of course treat the sounds using things like BBE sonic maximiser, TRACS3 dynamics, Flux bitter sweet, SSL strips and so on.
I layer - up quite often.
ATM I have the following softsynths;
Sylenth - but I've grown tired of it's tone
Gladiator 2 - I rarely use it as I find it has this very plastic thin sugary tonality. Even layering 64 voices leads to skinny harsh plastic sounds
DCAM synth squad - great for fx, ambient sounds and so on. Alright for the odd electro lead.
Imposcar - fun and useful but again not really what I'm after for main synth parts.
I do not buy synths that need any kind of platform to run them.
I would rather avoid i - lok. |

My latest tracks were made entirely by Sylenth & Z3ta, i use Sylenth for bass and leads and z3ta for the pluck sounds and pads, i also got nice acid sounds with Sylenth.
It's not about buying new software but knowing your existant completely, we fool ourselves thinking that we can get better results with other software when if you are a pro with a soft you can do everytihng. |

| At the moment I'm using Z3TA+2, Diva, and ElectraX mainly for leads and bass sounds, and I often use gladiator for bass and pad sounds. For leads I am increasingly reaching for Z3TA, it may be an old sound or cliche' to use but, I still love the gritty and fat leads I can get out of it. |

To be honest, I think Native Instrument's Razor is the type of softsynth you'd want to check out. You do need to have Reaktor player installed which is standalone or VST (free), unless you have the full Reaktor installed. This is a powerful little beast that has excellent modulation capabilities. I think Massive, Z3ta, and other FM synths can sound really good, but to be honest, they do sound like 'just another synth'.
Razor can sound absolutely filthy and nasty, and definitely generates really sexy overtones that you can modulate quite easily. It can also make lush evolving pads with complicated textures.
I find it a great synth since it sounds quite different from most other synths, but most importantly makes sounds that are actually useable. And it is rather inexpensive (well, I picked it up during black Friday for 39 bucks)
Another recommend that I would give is either Omnisphere or VSL (which I know it is not a softsynth) |

| Zebra is a must have. Massive has a unique digital sound. Nexus is for knobeads, and Reaktor can do everything. But since you said you use presets , reaktor is probably not your cup of tea as it requires knowledge beyond tinkering. |

| The more I learn about Sylenth1, the more I want to use it. It kind of sucks to have to rely on presets to get what you want. |

You and Mr clooney sex hole creampie lover shot, I don't rely on presets or tweaking. I've had a synth since I was about 12 - sound design is reasonably straight forward, but personaly I find Sylenth always has this slightly unconvincing toneality.
Reaktor / Razor sounds interesting as long as it's not some mindfuk to download it all. My studio PC is deliberately not online so DL some synths has proven a time suk. |

How the has no one mentioned Predator?
It's go to the point I am going to have to challenge myself to make a track without it.
Agree with what is in here though - Zebra, Sylenth and Razor are great choices. |

| Honestly tho, the fact that you mention the tone of the instrument leads me to believe you are trying to get some synth that sounds analog. If you want unique sounds, learn how to use external FX in conjunction with the synth. Synths sound as good as they will ever need to sound. The mod capabilities are what matter now. That and the patience to just with everything and lastly, sampling. Sample your synths and approach them as a sample. I guess what i'm saying is that if you use a subtractive synth as is, ya, nothing has really changed in 10 years soft synth wise and 30 years just synth wise. |
