New FXpansion Drum Plugin: Tremor (pg. 2)

Looks very interesting this, at present I use a range of things for drums and it gets a bit tiresome.

I tried Giest but did not find it user freindly so didn't buy. Could'nt find the most basic tasks such as how to EASILY import my samples with 1 or 2 clicks, not some drawn - out hassles.

Will this thing allow samples to be easily imported ON THE FLY - meaning as the track plays? Or is it a synth using it's own sounds only?

You're not alone. I owned Geist and Guru and sold both because I didn't find them to be very user friendly, particularly Geist, which I expected to be an improvement.

My understanding is that this is a drum synth only.

So as far as we know, Punch can do something that Tremor can't?

It looks that way. I only played around with the Punch demo for a short bit a while ago, but I was not all that impressed with either the drum synthesis or the samples in Punch. As I recall, you couldn't load your own samples (at least not at the time, maybe RP has added that ability in an update). So, I'd say that from what I've seen of Tremor so far, it seems to be a much better dedicated drum synth (based on DCAM's engine), whereas Punch seems to be a jack of both trades, master of neither IMO. But, maybe someone with more experience with Punch could set me straight. :)

I have to admit I played around with Geist for a couple of hours a while ago and I don't once remember feeling like I knew what I was doing with it at any point. It's the GUI equivalent of Milton Keynes, too easy to get lost in.

Tremor is indeed a dedicated drum synth, not a sample player. It gets sound-creation power from the deep TransMod system we first deployed in DCAM Synth Squad.

Poly-rhythm wise, each sequencing lane can have its own independent tempo multiplier (which can be bizzaro fractions like 17/31 if you really want) and its own repeat length (cue more suggestions of prime numbers from me). It is possible to create a single pattern that won't repeat for days.

Sounds very cool, Skot! Is it safe to assume that Tremor will be a 64-bit app?
SKoT_FX
Yup, 32/64 bit, OSX 10.5/10.6/10.7 *intel only*, Win7 32/64 (Vista 64 should work fine but we don't officially support Vista), WinXP 32.

Geist and DCAM Synth Squad owners will be able to buy Tremor for $99 for the first month.

Skot, D-Cam is my go to synth but as I mentioned with Geist I think you fall down on user freindlyness and I speak as someone who's very at home with synthesis. As an example the lfo's I've never figured out to this day, even how to switch one off! Those tabs at the top of the gui seem to be something to do with lfo control but honestly life is just too short.

The FUSOR synth control unit is baffling - for example your presets often show the verb setting on the verb itself as close to 0, yet there is tons of verb on the sound. I cannot for the life of me workout how to reduce the send amount to the verb from the main fusor overview unit - this is just a basic requirment so I dont know why you dont realise people will expect such a control to be intuative, not hidden away, not confusing.

I say all this not to moan, but to help you guys understand better what is putting off many a would be buyer. I regularly hear people claim Giest is too difficult to use - producers find creativity comes in bursts and techie mazes tend to kill it off there and then.

I'd lot to set up a firm which finds dimbos to road test equipment PRIOR to launch to iron out the bugs. I think all too often the road testers are very competent geeks who wont act in the manner a typical end user would.

Cheers

You know what's strange about this Richard is that, as I mentioned earlier, I also never got on very well with Geist/Guru. Both are obviously excellent, but it seems that there is a pretty wide gap between people who find them dead easy/intuitive, and guys like us who find exactly the opposite. What's stranger still IMO is that I bought Eco over a year ago and was shocked to see how differently it was implemented and how straightforward and dead easy it was to use. So, I upgraded to BFD2 because I was in need of some pretty serious "real" drums and was able to just dive in and get very deep with it with barely even cracking open the huge owner's manual. I see people complaining about how difficult BFD2 is all the time, watch some of the advanced tutorials on Groove3, etc. and just think, "really?" - it's one of the most powerful, yet intuitive (to me, at least) pieces of software I own. It's hard to believe that it's from the same company that made Geist! That's not a knock on FXpansion or their excellent products, just an observation.

Picked it up earlier this evening and have been playing around with it for the past few hours. It's very cool! A lot of people on KVR have been complaining about the CPU hit and the presets, but I'm finding on my Q6600 that the CPU typically hits around 25%, and maxes around 40% with the heaviest presets. Presets range from meh to excellent with most of them pretty good IMO, but the beauty of Tremor is in its tweakability and its kickass polyrhythmic sequencer. Definitely worth the $99 price tag for DCAM/Geist owners IMO.

Demo is available. Here are some vids.
