REVIEW: Hardwell @ Playhouse... because I like to shoot myself in the foot.

Annnnnd, (I probably should't be doing this. lol) here it is... My review for Hardwell's set last night @ Playhouse. Hardwell (Holland, #24 world ranked dj) started off with a great opening by dropping one of his original tracks... quickly though... it began to sound like another warm up top 100 list of tracks that aren't necessarily deeply rooted into Electronic Dance Music. Just my opinion you ask? No... I was there with several other dj's who they, themselves, spin multiple genres and have residencies through out Southern California. We shouldn't know every single track he plays as we would want to hear something different from world class talent like Hardwell. Something deep, something unreleased. Could it have been the city of hollywood atmosphere? Could it have been the fact that there might have been pressure by having Alesso, Skrillex, Afrojack, Peacetreaty, Morgan Page, Paris Hilton... etc... up there probably asking for cheesy mashups of top 40 songs? Who knows... we weren't up there to listen in on the conversation... but we were in the audience hearing the same tracks that we all could have heard at local bar down the street. Also, Please don't resort to dropping a dubstep track in the middle of your set just because skrillex showed up. And please don't drop the same track twice within 30 minutes just because alesso showed up. We are paying attention.

An artist of his stature has access to thousands of unreleased tracks that the public has never heard... he could have mind ed us to where we would be saying his name in our sleep... but that did not happen. An opportunity missed.

I, myself, have huge respect for the talented artist known as Hardwell. His productions set him apart from other dj's and place him on another level that most producers will never ever reach... his set in Hollywood, however, did not. If you listen to his other set's they are all absolutely incredible compilations of intricate builds, synths stabs, and well programmed sequencing. So note to self... to hear the real Hardwell someday, buy a ticket for a show in a different city... or just buy a ticket to Denmark to participate in the 25,000 person frenzy known as Sensation.

I will get A LOT of heat for being honest. I, myself, am nothing compared to these big names and wouldn't hold a candle to their success... however, I am a religious dance music listener for 15 years.

Would I do it again? Yes, sure.
Was it fun? Yes.
Was it disappointing, For a lot of us there... Very.

That's true for most DJ's. For some reason when they come to LA they feel the need to dumb down their sets or even worse, pre-program them. Perfect example.... TIESTO. Whenever he comes to LA he choreographs his shows. He has said it many times. But if you ever got a chance to see him outside of LA, heck, outside of the USA, in let's say Rosarito, TJ, or Mexicali, he's just freakin' awesome.

There's just something about LA that does this to DJ's.

hardwell was gonna drop that cinema track regardless....he played it last week in Madison, Wi

To be fair, he's playing 10 days in a row in the US. Something that most other DJ's can never claim to have done. I'm sure a lot of performances are going to be watered down just so he can get through all 10 days.

Didn't realize you were a Hardwell fan, Junior. Learn something new every day

Haha, sure darin. but he still has the option on to access THOUSANDS of unreleased tracks... he didn't take the option of playing something we have not heard and breaking new ground.

My set Live @ AVEC has him for my 8th track:
08. Hardwell - Encoded

but of course you've never been to 1 of my shows. you wouldn't have a way of knowing :P (lol)

ps. you going to hernan catteneo, darin? I'm buying my presale.

edit: wait, they picked you for the opening? guestlist please!

Why would you assume that he's famous for playing groundbreaking new tracks? He's more known as a producer than as a DJ. That crowd is perfectly happy hearing the same stuff that's being played on the radio.
Junior Chavez
... never said that...

I clearly stated that he had an opportunity to break new ground... which is what dj's of his level should be doing.

never did I say or assume that's the reason he got big...

he got big for his productions.

wait... are you reading? pay attention! lol.

Yes, I read what you wrote and understand what you're saying. You are making an assumption that DJ's at his level should be playing a certain way, and I'm saying that's almost never the case and not what I would have expected if I were at the show.

I mean yea, I would probably work a little harder if I was playing for 25,000 people in Denmark versus 800 people in Hollywood.
Junior Chavez
he's #24 in the world.... and he does this full time...

Really darin?

you like paying $40 to hear a world class talented producer drop hip-hop mashups that anyone with an internet connection can buy online...

really?...

...

....
