Using an S2 outside of Traktor?

I also posted this on the Traktor forums, but I doubt I'll get any answer there, so I thought to myself '"hey, why don't I just go talk directly to the real experts", so here goes...
Is it possible to use the NI Traktor Kontrol S2 as a regular midi controller in FL Studio, or any other DAW for that matter.
My friend just bought one, and we tried hooking it up for fun, and we installed the drivers, and we found the controller and enabled it in the FLS settings, but we tried to link different parameters to the controller but it never picked up anything, like it does when I wiggle the knobs on the Oxygen25 i have hooked up.
So yeah, to my understanding it works just like any other midi controller, and I should be able to map it to anything in my DAW. Does anybody have an idea to why we're not getting it to work?
THanks in advance,

you need the S2/s4 editor to put it in midi mode, by default its in traktor mode and it will only listen to traktor, but yes then anything is mapable on anything

Oh sweet! Stupid follow-up question: Will I have to put it back in Traktor mode each time I want to mix, or will midi mode work for both?

You could technically leave in MIDI, but then you would have to remap all the buttons and knobs again as MIDI, which is not as responsive as the traktor controls.
